After recently unveiling the MacBook Neo and the M5 MacBook Air, Apple’s latest Macs were expected to capitalize on the company's current momentum. However, a new challenge has emerged. Surprisingly, this issue isn’t related to design, chips, or software, but rather to memory—and AI plays a significant role in this.
Delays for Apple’s upcoming Macs may be on the horizon
As reported by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, widespread memory shortages could postpone Apple’s upcoming Mac releases, which include the next-generation Mac Studio and a redesigned touchscreen MacBook Pro. The refresh of the Mac Studio, initially anticipated around mid-2026, might now be pushed back until as late as October.

This isn’t merely a hypothetical situation; Apple is currently encountering delays with its existing memory-intensive models, complicating the launch of new, more demanding hardware. Internally, there are worries that unveiling new Macs without a reliable supply could result in limited availability from the start, something Apple usually strives to avoid.

The reason is straightforward: current memory-demanding models are already experiencing shipment delays, and the newer models with even greater demands are getting caught in the same supply crunch. This is where AI becomes relevant. The significant push for AI workloads, including those in data centers, GPUs, and high-performance computing, has driven up the demand for advanced memory, squeezing supply across the board and affecting consumer devices like Macs.
This issue extends beyond Apple
Taking a broader view, this isn't simply a failure on Apple’s part; it’s indicative of a strained supply chain. AI servers and enterprise hardware are consuming high-bandwidth memory, leaving less available for other applications. The timing is particularly inconvenient for Apple, as their Mac business has been gaining momentum, and the last thing they want is to postpone major upgrades due to shortages in components. However, launching with limited supply may arguably be worse.

The larger implications are clear: AI is not only transforming software; it’s also altering hardware priorities.
