Dropbox is transforming ChatGPT into its central productivity platform by introducing three new applications.
The storage company is introducing a Dropbox file app, a Dropbox Dash enterprise search app, and a Reclaim AI calendar app within ChatGPT, enabling users to access, save, and carry out their work tasks without leaving the AI interface. This initiative further indicates that ChatGPT is evolving into a productivity operating system rather than merely a chat tool.
Dropbox is launching three applications in ChatGPT, enhancing its file storage, enterprise search, and AI calendar offerings within OpenAI’s chat platform. The three apps—a fundamental Dropbox file app, a Dropbox Dash app, and a Reclaim AI calendar app—address the primary coordination tasks that knowledge workers frequently engage in: locating documents, obtaining insights from company knowledge, and managing their time.
All three apps are currently available or will soon be accessible in the ChatGPT app directory. The core Dropbox app, now accessible to customers on any plan globally, enables users to view and preview their Dropbox files, save AI-generated content directly to Dropbox, and share links during a ChatGPT conversation. Additionally, ChatGPT can reference files stored in a user’s Dropbox account when creating drafts or responding to inquiries, providing pertinent context without the need for manual uploads or copy-pasting between applications.
Dropbox has stated that existing sharing permissions and access controls remain intact when files are accessed through the ChatGPT integration. The Dropbox Dash app significantly enhances this context. Dash, Dropbox’s enterprise search tool, consolidates content from over 30 integrated workplace applications, including email, Slack, Google Workspace, and other commonly used tools, into a single searchable surface.
With the ChatGPT integration, users can ask questions and receive answers tailored from that extensive company knowledge base, specific to the information accessible to that user and their team. The Dash app will soon be available for existing Dash customers, with a free 30-day trial for new users.
The third app integrates Reclaim AI, the AI scheduling tool Dropbox acquired for $40.2 million in July 2024, directly into ChatGPT. Reclaim uses artificial intelligence to efficiently manage and optimize Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook schedules, protecting focus time, scheduling based on preferences, and resolving scheduling conflicts. The integration with ChatGPT allows users to add events, find meeting times, analyze productivity trends, and get an overview of their day within a chat exchange.
This app is globally available in English to users utilizing the latest version of the Reclaim AI calendar system. The launch of these three apps signifies a larger trend in how productivity software companies are reorienting themselves in relation to AI chat interfaces.
Instead of developing competing AI assistants, which would place Dropbox directly in competition with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, Dropbox is choosing to integrate its products within the platforms where users are increasingly active. This approach parallels other enterprise software companies that are creating applications within the ChatGPT ecosystem, which has swiftly transitioned from conversational AI to a task-execution layer: a space where users not only inquire but also act on the responses.
For Dropbox, whose core file-sync service is contending with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, positioning Dropbox as the preferred storage destination for AI-generated content could significantly bolster the product’s relevance.
