Wuling has introduced the refreshed 2026 Hongguang Mini EV in China, and it’s precisely the type of vehicle that entices US consumers towards Chinese electric vehicles. With a price range of 44,800 to 54,800 yuan (approximately $6,500 to $8,000), this compact four-door, four-seater returns with a new design, an upgraded interior, and an improved range that deserves attention.

How does the design hold up?

To be honest, the 2026 Hongguang Mini appears heavily influenced by the Mini Cooper, adopting the memorable name, the small car configuration with round headlights, and a compact aesthetic.

However, it does incorporate subtle design elements that distinguish it. While the Mini Cooper maintains a sleek and sporty appearance, the Hongguang Mini opts for a more boxy, upright form that Wuling describes as “sweet square.” This results in a vehicle that looks more approachable compared to its British rival.

The clover-pattern wheels and dual-tone exterior also contribute to its unique character, even though the round headlights clearly pay tribute to a classic. Overall, I believe the car has a great appearance, and considering its price, there’s nothing else quite like it available.

The redesign also includes three new paint choices that utilize an eight-layer application process, with the option of a dual-tone finish. Measuring 3,268mm in length, it remains compact while being slightly larger, giving it a more substantial feel.

The interior has also received a significant upgrade. It features a dual-tone layout, a 10.1-inch touchscreen with a more streamlined interface, and a column-mounted gear selector that opens up space in the center console.

      What about the range?

According to CarNewsChina, the 2026 Hongguang Mini EV provides two range options: 205 km (127 miles) and 301 km (187 miles) as per China’s CLTC cycle. Keep in mind that real-world range is generally lower.

Car model | Price (Yuan) | Price (USD – approx.)

      -----------|----------------|------------------

      205 km Advanced | 44,800 | $6,500

      205 km Premium | 49,800 | $7,300

      301 km Advanced | 49,800 | $7,300

      301 km Premium | 54,800 | $8,000

It also supports DC fast charging, which allows it to increase battery from 30% to 80% in 35 minutes, a commendable feature for a vehicle at this price point. While it may not compete with the rapid charging standards of modern Chinese EVs, it still offers good value for the cost.

The 30 kW motor remains the same, so don’t expect quick acceleration. However, at under $8,000, the Hongguang Mini EV is not marketed as a performance vehicle. Its goal is practicality, and in many respects, it achieves that aim.
