A year after its launch on desktop, Gmail's most robust privacy feature is now available where most enterprise emails are actually written: on mobile devices.

Your most confidential Gmail messages now have enhanced privacy protection on your mobile phone. Google has officially begun to roll out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Gmail on both Android and iOS platforms.

For the first time, eligible users on Android and iOS can write and read encrypted emails directly within the Gmail app, eliminating the need to download third-party applications.

How does E2EE function in Gmail for mobile?

Gmail's end-to-end encryption was first introduced for desktop users in April 2025, coinciding with its 21st anniversary. Support for external recipients followed in October 2025. However, smartphones were left out, creating a significant privacy gap.

The April 2026 update finally addresses this issue. If you're familiar with E2EE from other messaging services, you can easily understand its application in Gmail: only you and the recipient are able to access the email content.

When composing an email, you simply need to tap the lock icon, toggle the “additional encryption” option, and send the email. If the recipient is a Gmail user, the email arrives in their inbox like any standard email. If they use a different platform, they receive a secure link to read and respond via a web browser (without needing a Gmail account).

Who can actually use E2EE on Gmail for mobile?

Here’s the catch. Gmail for mobile will have E2EE, but only for Google Workspace Enterprise Plus accounts that include the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on. Administrators must enable access for Android and iOS through the client-side encryption settings.

In other words, personal Gmail users on mobile won’t have access to this feature. Nonetheless, by bridging the gap between Gmail on the web and mobile, Google has alleviated a significant concern for clients comparing Workspace with the Microsoft 365 suite.

During a 2024 visit to Dharamshala, a renowned spiritual center in India, I was surprised by how many remote workers were occupying café seats, glued to their laptops. At least three of my dorm mates mentioned they manage social media content for US-based creators with large followings. One ambitious 17-year-old eagerly shared that she managed regional YouTube channels for a well-known US content creator with over three million subscribers and aimed to rapidly grow their fan base in the heavily populated Southeast Asian market.

NVIDIA's anticipated N1 chip has surfaced again, and if this leak holds true, the future of laptops could be quite exciting. An engineering sample motherboard featuring NVIDIA's forthcoming System-on-Chip was spotted on a Chinese resale site. While this is not an official announcement and skepticism is merited, the information is compelling.

Microsoft is making an effort to clarify some confusing points regarding its Copilot AI. After one of its documents painted a less useful picture of the AI than what the company’s marketing suggests, users noticed a disclaimer in Microsoft’s Copilot terms of use stating that the service is intended for "entertainment purposes only," cautioning that it can make errors, may not perform as expected, and shouldn't be relied upon for critical advice. This statement also emphasized that users should utilize Copilot at their own risk, raising eyebrows given Microsoft’s aggressive promotion of Copilot as a productivity tool across Windows, Microsoft 365, and enterprise software.
