      Microsoft is seemingly attempting to address a troubling inconsistency regarding its Copilot AI. This comes after one of its documents portrayed the AI as significantly less effective than the company's promotional material implies.

      Recently, users discovered that the terms of use for Microsoft’s Copilot included a cautionary note stating that the service is intended for “entertainment purposes only,” while also indicating it may make errors, may not function as intended, and should not be relied upon for crucial advice. This section further stated that users must engage with Copilot at their own risk, which raised concerns given Microsoft's aggressive marketing of Copilot as a productivity tool for Windows, Microsoft 365, and enterprise applications.

      How is Microsoft responding to this?

      Microsoft explains that the language found in the document is outdated and originates from Copilot's earlier phase as a Bing-based search assistant. In a statement to Windows Latest, the company indicated that the “entertainment purposes” language no longer accurately represents how Copilot is utilized today and will be revised in the upcoming update of the terms.

      Since its days as Bing Chat, Copilot has evolved significantly, and Microsoft now markets it as much more than a basic chatbot. However, this doesn't entirely resolve the issue.

      Why the inconsistency is difficult to overlook

      While a legal disclaimer advising against using Copilot for important advice is common in the AI sector, framing it as “for entertainment purposes only” has a different impact when linked to a product that Microsoft promotes for creating documents, presentations, and managing workplace tasks and workflows.
