YouTube is testing a more efficient method for viewing videos more quickly.

YouTube's newest experiment aims to save you time by speeding up video playback.

YouTube Premium is a subscription I happily pay for, especially given the overwhelming number of unskippable ads on the platform lately. The service not only provides an ad-free experience but also features background play and several experimental tools unavailable to regular users. Now, YouTube is introducing a new experiment for Premium subscribers that could truly alter your viewing habits.

This feature, named “Auto Speed”, automatically adjusts the playback speed for you rather than requiring manual changes. It modifies the playback speed during your watching session, enabling you to consume content more swiftly without losing understanding of the material.

How to enable the Auto Speed feature on YouTube

If you’re subscribed to YouTube Premium, you can activate the Auto Speed feature via YouTube’s experimental features currently. However, even after enabling it, I do not see the option to activate it yet, suggesting that the rollout is taking place in phases.

YouTube has outlined the steps to turn it on: while playing a video, click the settings icon, navigate to Playback controls, and switch on the Auto Speed toggle.

Now, YouTube will intelligently alter the playback speed, allowing for quicker video viewing without impairing comprehension.

      Are there any limitations?

Before getting too enthusiastic, there are some important details to consider. Auto Speed is only available on Android and iOS, meaning desktop users will need to wait or continue adjusting playback speed manually.

Additionally, the feature currently works only with English-language videos, which may restrict its utility based on your viewing preferences. It is also available only until April 27, leaving limited time to try it out.

Nonetheless, for YouTube Premium subscribers, this adds a nice enhancement to the ad-free experience.

Researchers at KAIST have made a significant advancement in miniaturizing camera technology, focusing on addressing the camera bump issue in consumer devices. They have created an ultra-thin camera module that offers a 140-degree field of view while being less than 1mm thick, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into modern gadgets. Current high-performance cameras typically utilize stacked lenses, which add bulk and result in protruding modules.
