ChatGPT has introduced a $100 plan, but it's not suitable for everyone.
OpenAI focuses on power users with a new Pro tier.
OpenAI has added a new pricing tier for ChatGPT, introducing a Pro plan that costs $100/month, which adds to the existing offerings and creates a more complex pricing structure.
This plan is specifically targeted at users who are engaging with ChatGPT at a higher level than average.
OpenAI's new $100 tier is designed for intensive users
The newly launched $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier is situated between the $20 Plus option and the $200 Pro plan. The intent is evident: it's tailored for Codex users and others who require more than the Plus plan offers without needing to upgrade to the $200 option. This new tier significantly increases usage limits, allowing for about five times the usage of Plus, and can temporarily extend to ten times more Codex usage.
OpenAI has announced updates to its ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscriptions to accommodate the rising demand for Codex. The new $100/month Pro tier provides five times more Codex usage than Plus and is ideal for extended, intensive Codex sessions. In a statement, OpenAI highlighted this new tier's advantages.
The need for this new tier is underscored by the fact that Codex now has over 3 million weekly users, with a remarkable fivefold growth in just three months and approximately 70% month-on-month increase. This rapid growth illustrates why the company is establishing a specific pricing tier for high-demand workflows.
Additionally, the plan grants access to advanced models, comprehensive research tools, and enhanced functionalities for agent-style tasks. In summary, this tier caters not to casual users but to individuals utilizing ChatGPT as a serious work instrument.
A change in pricing structure
This development marks a noticeable transition toward usage-based pricing, where increased AI utilization incurs higher costs. Given the expensive nature of advanced workloads, a uniform pricing model was unlikely to remain viable.
Moreover, this shift alters the overall perception. Initially designed for all users, the tool is gradually becoming divided by cost. With $100 becoming the median price, AI is increasingly resembling a premium subscription model.
