Even if Samsung releases a Galaxy S27 Pro, the name by itself won't be enough to ensure its success.

Samsung doesn’t require a new designation; it needs a better middle-tier flagship.

New rumors have sparked discussions about a potential Galaxy Pro flagship phone once more, and this seems logical to me—but not for flattering reasons. Samsung might introduce a fourth Galaxy S27 model next year, with a “Pro” edition anticipated to sit just below the top-tier S27 Ultra.

This model would effectively close the gap between the standard and Ultra Galaxy phones by offering high-end features, excluding the S Pen. Some of these premium features might include the newly introduced Privacy Display from the S26 Ultra.

While all this sounds wise on paper, it also suggests a level of acceptance.

After using the Galaxy S26, I have a recurring thought. This compact phone offers a solid software experience, dependable cameras, and is generally easy to recommend as a fundamental flagship. However, "dependable" is no longer sufficient when these devices come with flagship pricing.

The basic Galaxy S models present the actual issue.

Samsung’s own S26 comparison page indicates that the base S26 is limited to 25W charging, while the S26+ offers 45W, and the Ultra has been upgraded to 60W. The camera specifications are similar. The Galaxy S26 and S26+ share identical 12MP ultrawide, 50MP wide, and 10MP telephoto configurations, while the Ultra features a more ambitious setup with a 50MP ultrawide, 200MP main, and a 50MP + 10MP telephoto combination.

Thus, aside from the Ultra, the other two models feel like an afterthought, albeit an expensive one. This is why a Galaxy S27 Pro could inject some energy into the S27 lineup. Just like the basic Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, as well as the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, there could be a distinct difference in the intermediate model. At present, the base and Plus models seem to do just enough, while the Ultra handles everything.

The Galaxy S27 Pro must serve as a course correction, not merely a rebranding.

However, a Pro model will only be effective if Samsung truly utilizes it to establish a compelling middle option. One that features faster charging, enhanced camera hardware, and a substantial justification for its existence beneath the Ultra.

I believe Samsung is indeed in need of this transformation. Yet, merely renaming it won’t suffice. If Samsung intends for the Pro phone to hold significance, it must elevate this non-ultra Galaxy S phone beyond just a safe choice and restore its value to warrant the premium price. If not, the S27 Pro will simply be another label on a lineup where excitement is concentrated solely at the top.

A Galaxy S27 Pro could enhance Samsung’s range, but only if it addresses the issues related to charging, value, and hardware present in the current non-Ultra models.
