      Samsung is finally taking a step it should have done years ago: discontinuing its own Messages app. While this may sound like just another app closure, it’s more than a feature being phased out. Samsung is essentially stating, “Go ahead and use Google’s app instead.”

      Samsung has officially disclosed that its native Messages app will be phased out in July 2026, with users directed to use Google Messages as the standard alternative. After the transition, Samsung Messages will no longer work as a typical texting app, and most users will need to switch if they wish to continue sending regular texts.

      Now, here’s the interesting part: this hasn’t come as a surprise. Samsung has gradually distanced itself from its own app over the years. According to 9to5Google, new Galaxy phones already come with Google Messages as the default application, and in some instances, Samsung Messages isn’t even pre-installed anymore. So, this isn’t a sudden choice. It’s merely the final blow.

      This feels less like a shutdown and more like a capitulation

      Rather than keeping its own app alive, Samsung is completely transferring control to Google, banking on a more integrated Android messaging experience powered by RCS. On paper, this is logical. In comparison to Samsung Messages, Google Messages offers better consistency across devices, supports modern functionalities like read receipts, improved media sharing, encryption, and is more compatible with carriers.

      However, there’s also a slightly disappointing undertone. Android was once all about choice, and Samsung was a prominent advocate of that diversity. Now, it’s effectively eliminating its own alternative and nudging users toward a single app.
