Restrictions on social media for minors are gaining momentum in an increasing number of countries.

Children using social media present a complicated scenario. There are numerous risks involved, and no parent wishes to confront the consequences. The situation becomes even more complex with the rising trend of parents managing social media accounts for their kids. At first glance, it appears harmless and might seem like a controlled environment. However, the internet lacks a safety mechanism. Regardless of how diligently an account is overseen, there is no foolproof way to keep predators at bay. This aspect transforms what might seem like a “well-intentioned” setup into something much more alarming.

What was once a low-level anxiety at the dinner table has now dramatically moved into courtrooms and government discussions. Concerns regarding children and social media are evolving into legislation. Countries such as Switzerland and Austria are no longer remaining neutral; they are seriously contemplating stricter regulations, which might even include outright bans for younger users.
An astounding 94% of participants in a recent survey believe that minors require enhanced protection from the negative aspects of social media. This isn’t merely a concern; it’s a resounding collective declaration of “enough is enough.”
Moreover, there is increasing skepticism toward Big Tech. Approximately 78% of participants feel that companies like Meta and Google exert too much influence over public perception. It’s difficult to dispute that claim. Recently, a jury in Los Angeles found Meta and Google responsible for creating platforms that can endanger young users. This is significant—it establishes a precedent and, more crucially, conveys a message. The era of “we didn’t know” has ended. Now, the pressure is mounting, not just from users but also from the legal system.
The unregulated nature of social media is beginning to face scrutiny.

What is becoming apparent is that the unrestricted landscape of social media is reaching its limits. For years, platforms have gotten away with minimal oversight, particularly concerning younger audiences. However, this nonchalant and almost reckless attitude is beginning to fracture. Evidence is accumulating, and people are starting to take notice. But is this really about safeguarding children, or is it about increasing control? Because, depending on who is in charge, these two intentions can easily resemble each other. Governments may assert it’s about safety, and there’s validity to that claim. Yet, there’s also a delicate line between protective measures and overreach, and it seems to be narrowing with each passing day.
One thing is certain: social media has evolved beyond being merely a space for memes and aimless scrolling. It has transitioned into a much larger, more complex, and significantly more serious arena. This discussion is just getting started.

WhatsApp's compatibility with CarPlay is on the horizon.
As someone who has been a dedicated CarPlay user for several years, this update feels long overdue. WhatsApp is finally developing a dedicated app for CarPlay, and it’s about time. Until now, all I could do was view notifications on the dashboard, with no meaningful interaction. The downside is that it’s still in testing and currently only available to iOS beta users. So it is coming—just not quite yet.

Meta begins testing Instagram Plus subscription featuring exclusive benefits.
Every social media platform seems to be leaning towards subscriptions, and honestly, it’s becoming a bit excessive. The latest instance comes from Meta, which is reportedly encouraging users toward a feature called Instagram Plus. A Reddit user highlighted that these prompts are appearing even for those who are content with the free version. Personally, I’ve used Instagram for years and have yet to encounter this on my account. Thus, this isn’t a widespread rollout—at least not for everyone. It appears that Meta is discreetly exploring this approach in selected markets before launching it fully. Still, the direction is evident. The free experience remains, but the real question is how long it will feel like the pared-down version.
Instagram Plus sounds appealing, but what does it truly provide?

Bluesky has created a new AI tool aimed at liberating users from social algorithms.
The Attie app utilizes natural language to generate personalized feeds, eliminating the confusion of algorithms.
Bluesky has launched a new AI application called Attie, which does something that most social media platforms typically don’t allow. It gives users control over their own algorithm. You can craft custom feeds by interacting with Attie just like you would with any AI assistant. Simply tell it what type of content you wish to see, and it will instantly generate a personalized timeline for you. There’s no coding or complicated configurations required. This announcement was made over the weekend at the Atmosphere conference, where attendees were given initial access to the private beta.
