PUBG's top-down experiment has concluded before it truly began.
PUBG: Blindspot is set to shut down today, March 30, before it can fully leave early access. An official announcement has confirmed that the game will end its service at 6:00 PM KST.
The closure is unfortunate, but surprisingly, Blindspot never seemed to be a complete failure. In fact, it managed to develop a niche audience despite being one of many multiplayer experiments.
Why is it being discontinued?
Unlike the traditional PUBG format, Blindspot opted for a top-down tactical shooter approach, focusing on more concentrated, strategic 5v5 combat rather than the expansive chaos of a battle royale. This distinct style helped it stand out among other shooters, appealing particularly to those who preferred a strategy-driven game within the PUBG universe, similar to Rainbow Six Siege.
And it did find a dedicated player base. Reports indicate that the game had a “Mostly Positive” user rating on Steam, even though its overall player numbers struggled.
Appreciated but not widely adopted
Krafton has stated simply that, despite attempts to enhance the game experience, it no longer believes it can provide a “meaningful experience through Early Access” moving forward.
While this mirrors typical shutdown announcements, it appears the core issue was clear: insufficient player retention. The game faced low player counts, prolonged matchmaking waits, and a lack of momentum, which are vital for the success of live-service games.
A brief yet enjoyable journey
PUBG: Blindspot only entered early access at the beginning of last month, making this shutdown occur in less than two months. The game had a unique aesthetic, and some players genuinely appreciated its offerings. However, in the realm of multiplayer games, being “pretty good” often isn't adequate. Despite facing criticism, such as server difficulties and complicated controls, the potential was evident.
Sometimes, success hinges on time, player volume, and a bit of luck. Unfortunately, Blindspot didn't secure enough of any of these elements.
