Bluesky has developed a new AI tool aimed at liberating you from social algorithms.

Bluesky has just launched a new AI application named Attie, which allows users to do something that most social media platforms typically do not permit: it gives you control over your own algorithm.

You can create personalized feeds by conversing with Attie as you would with any AI assistant. Simply specify the type of content you're interested in, and it will generate a custom timeline instantly. There's no need for coding or complex configurations. This announcement was made over the weekend during the Atmosphere conference, where attendees received the first access to the private beta version.

Attie operates on the AT Protocol, which is Bluesky’s open social framework. This means it draws from your activities throughout the entire ecosystem, rather than being limited to a single platform. The underlying principle is straightforward: to transfer algorithmic control from platforms back to the users.

      Create your feed through conversation

Log in using your Atmosphere credentials, the same ones you utilize for Bluesky or any other applications built on this protocol. Attie already has an understanding of your previous discussions and your preferences since the system shares data transparently across different apps.

Once logged in, you can ask Attie for posts you might want to view or share. You can instruct it to compile a feed focused on a specific theme, a particular mood, or a combination of accounts you follow. The app assembles that feed immediately.

Interim CEO Toni Schneider describes this as the beginning of a transition where individuals can create on the Atmosphere without needing to code.

A purposeful challenge to big tech's AI strategies

Large platforms are eager to integrate AI into their services, usually in ways that prioritize the company’s interests. Jay Graber, who has stepped down as Bluesky CEO to concentrate on development, expressed this clearly. AI is often utilized to increase user engagement, collect data, and manage algorithms.

Graber is now the chief innovation officer, and Attie is her first initiative following this transition. She emphasized that AI should benefit people rather than platforms. An open system like the AT Protocol empowers users directly.

Schneider noted that Attie is an AI tool designed with a focus on people's needs. The development team intends to leverage AI for purposes that genuinely enhance user experience, rather than merely encouraging endless scrolling. This stands in stark contrast to the strategies employed by Meta and other companies regarding similar technology.

      Future prospects and potential costs

Currently, Attie is in a private beta phase, beginning with attendees of the Atmosphere conference. The company has not yet revealed a broader release date, nor has it made a decision about whether the app will involve a fee in the future.

At this moment, the priority is to distribute Attie to a larger audience and to enhance its capabilities. The long-term vision encompasses allowing users to create their own comprehensive social applications, not just personalized feeds. If realized, Bluesky’s open protocol could evolve into a foundation for something significantly larger than a single social network.
