New emoji, battery management, and Safari updates lead the latest version
Apple has officially released macOS Tahoe 26.4. Although it’s not a major update, it includes several practical tweaks and enhancements.
The focus of this update is on refinements rather than introducing significant new features, with Apple implementing minor quality-of-life improvements, system optimizations, and bug fixes. Notably, the anticipated upgraded Siri AI features are still absent.
What’s included in macOS 26.4?
While the update may seem subtle, it does contain a few significant enhancements. One of the most practical improvements is the introduction of a Battery Charge Limit feature, enabling users to restrict charging to between 80% and 100%, which will help maintain long-term battery health—a feature many Mac users have desired for some time.
Apple has also reinstated the compact Safari tab bar, providing users with a more space-efficient browsing option that had previously been removed. In line with iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4 includes new emoji, featuring fun additions like an orca and a distorted face, as updates are never complete without them.
Furthermore, macOS 26.4 brings notifications for apps still utilizing Rosetta 2, Apple's translation layer for running Intel applications on Apple Silicon Macs. This aligns with Apple's broader initiative to phase out Intel support in future versions of macOS, encouraging developers to update their applications sooner rather than later. Essentially, this update quietly indicates the direction Apple is heading.
macOS 26.4 also includes several minor yet useful updates across applications. Freeform is gaining upgraded features for subscribers of Apple Creator Studio, such as enhanced image tools and a premium content library, though the free version remains unchanged. Apple has improved Purchase Sharing by allowing family members to use their own payment methods, added new keyboard shortcuts in Reminders for marking tasks as urgent, and simplified access to subtitle and caption settings with real-time previews.
What’s missing?
The most glaring omission is the absence of Siri AI upgrades. Despite prior expectations, macOS 26.4 does not encompass any significant advancements for Siri or Apple’s overarching AI initiatives. This coincides with recent reports suggesting delays in Apple's AI roadmap, which is now impacting multiple products and updates. Nevertheless, macOS 26.4 serves more as a polishing update rather than a headline-maker.
