OpenAI shuts down the Sora AI video application, and it probably won't be coming back.

Sora was reportedly headed towards integration with ChatGPT, but now, the AI video generator is being discontinued permanently.

Just six months after its launch as an independent application, the Sora AI video generator is being retired. This decision comes as a surprise, especially since Google has significantly increased its AI video initiatives with Veo, and various Chinese AI brands continue to achieve notable success with offerings like the viral Seedance AI video engine.

A swift end for a trending AI tool

OpenAI communicated, “What you created with Sora was important, and we understand this news is disheartening. More details will follow soon, including timelines for the app and API, as well as information on preserving your creations.” Interestingly, there were recent reports suggesting that OpenAI might eventually incorporate Sora’s video generation features into ChatGPT, akin to how Google has integrated video capabilities into products like Gemini and NotebookLM.

The announcement to bid farewell to the Sora app was made with gratitude to all who used Sora, contributed ideas, and fostered a community around it. OpenAI acknowledged the significance of users' creations and the disappointment surrounding this news, promising updates on app timelines and work preservation.

Shortly after its launch, Sora faced backlash regarding copyright infringement. The company promptly adjusted its approach, granting more control to rights holders like Disney and various other well-known franchise owners, whose intellectual properties were frequently imitated by Sora. However, these challenges proved to be quite overwhelming, resulting in insufficient revenue.

      What lies ahead for Sora?

While it may have made sense to phase out the Sora app but maintain it in other forms, it seems that Sora is set to be completely discontinued. According to The Wall Street Journal, the AI video generator will be permanently removed. They noted, “Along with the consumer app, OpenAI will also discontinue a developer version of Sora and will not provide support for video features within ChatGPT.”

Sora was one of the initial mainstream AI tools that contributed to the proliferation of nonsensical “AI slop” videos online. Besides the clear copyright infringements, it was misused for some disturbingly morbid trends, like creating eerily lifelike videos of deceased public figures, including Kobe Bryant, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, and Amy Winehouse.

These videos sparked significant online outrage. Yet, this wasn't the first incident of its kind; the emergence of AI led to a trend where companies charged for generating videos of deceased soldiers as a way for families to say goodbye.

This AI assesses whether your driving habits indicate a crash risk

Researchers indicate that tracking eye movements, heart rate, and personality information can identify risks early.

A new AI model is tackling a crucial question that many drivers fail to consider in time: how likely are you to crash before even starting the engine? The system evaluates driving behavior by analyzing indicators such as eye movements, heart rate, and personality traits to identify early warning signs. Instead of waiting for real-world errors, it uses simulated driving tests to highlight behaviors associated with risky outcomes.

Spotify claims AI slop is overwhelming your music feed, launches artist control tool

A new approval system aims to prevent fake tracks from overtaking artist profiles.

What began as a commitment to openness is now appearing to be a potential liability. Spotify reported that AI-generated content is swamping users' music feeds, prompting the rollout of a control to mitigate the problem. The company is testing a feature that allows artists to preview songs before they are presented on their profiles. Named Artist Profile Protection, this tool is currently in beta, adding a checkpoint to a previously easily manipulated system. Artists can review releases associated with their identity before they go live, helping to eliminate a common route exploited by spam uploads and mislabeled songs.
