LG's next-generation 120Hz display is expected to significantly enhance laptop battery life.
Your screen no longer has to waste energy while you look at your inbox.
LG Display
LG Display has started mass production of a new LCD laptop panel that incorporates Oxide 1Hz technology. This technology automatically adjusts the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz according to the activity on the screen. This marks the first time such technology is being mass-produced for laptops, and the improvement in battery life is truly noteworthy.
However, you might wonder how this can be the first instance of a 120Hz refresh rate display. The answer lies in the fact that not all 120Hz displays function the same way. Many laptop screens dynamically adjust the refresh rate between 25Hz and 120Hz, depending on what’s being displayed.
LG Display
This LG panel can reduce its refresh rate to 1Hz when the content on the screen is mostly static, such as when reading emails or reviewing research papers, and can quickly increase to 120Hz for dynamic content like watching sports or gaming.
Why is the 1Hz refresh rate significant?
Refresh rate denotes how frequently your screen redraws itself each second. A higher refresh rate results in smoother visuals, making it better suited for fast-moving content.
The issue is that most laptop displays operate at high refresh rates consistently or cannot lower their refresh rates sufficiently to make a meaningful difference on battery life, even when there is no motion on the screen. This leads to wasted energy, which impacts battery life.
LG Display
LG Display has created its algorithms and new materials to ensure the low-power mode functions effectively. This has led to a 48% enhancement in battery life compared to existing alternatives—a significant improvement that will prolong your laptop's battery usage.
Who will be the first to use it?
LG Display is initially supplying these panels to Dell for its premium XPS series. Dell unveiled new XPS models with this panel at CES 2026 in January. Furthermore, LG Display plans to launch a 1Hz OLED version using the same technology, with mass production set to begin in 2027.
