      Yale researchers have discovered that AI-generated summaries are more effective educators than those written by humans, though there is a caveat.

      Nowadays, many of us rely on AI chatbots and search engines for information. Google even presents AI-generated summaries before directing us to the sources from which the information was gathered.

      A recent study by Yale indicates that while AI-generated responses are quick, convenient, and clear, they may also shape our opinions. Daniel Karell, an assistant professor of sociology at Yale, along with his team, aimed to determine whether reading AI-generated summaries of historical events allowed individuals to learn better compared to human-written summaries.

      To investigate this, participants were given brief summaries of historical events, some composed by humans and others generated by AI tools like ChatGPT, and were subsequently quizzed on their recollection.

      The findings showed that those who read AI-generated summaries consistently answered more questions accurately.

      Is AI simply more effective at disseminating information than humans?

      Karell believes this can be attributed to the manner in which AI presents information. “It’s as if the model took Wikipedia and enhanced its readability,” he remarked. The AI summaries were more fluid, clearer, and easier to remember, even when participants were aware they were reading AI-generated content.

      Interestingly, even when informed that the summary was AI-generated, participants still learned more from it than from the human-written versions.

      Should you be concerned about this?

      Here is where it becomes intriguing. In a subsequent paper published in PNAS Nexus, the same researchers found that AI summaries not only provide better education but also impact political views.

      When an AI summary had a liberal bias, readers tended to adopt more liberal viewpoints. Conversely, a conservative bias resulted in the opposite outcome. The researchers suggest this effect occurs because AI don’t merely present facts but frame them in a way that seems more logical and persuasive.

      AI tools are increasingly becoming the primary means by which people learn about history and current events. This isn't necessarily a negative development. However, it is important to recognize that the instruments shaping our learning can also subtly influence our thoughts.

      At the same time, the problem of AI hallucinations continues to be significant, and AI-generated summaries can sometimes mislead users even more. A study by researchers at USC’s Information Sciences Institute found that AI systems could conduct propaganda campaigns with minimal human involvement.

      When combined with the notion that AI can be more persuasive than humans, it raises concerns about how these tools could manipulate human thought processes, steering us towards a more divided society.
