Rivian is collaborating with Uber to deploy thousands of robotaxis on the streets.

Uber's $1.25 billion investment in Rivian's R2 robotaxi has the potential to transform how millions of individuals request rides in 25 cities by the year 2031.

Uber and Rivian have entered into a strategic agreement that could see up to 50,000 robotaxis (fully autonomous vehicles) operating by 2031.

Under this partnership, Uber will invest $300 million in Rivian, which equates to approximately 19.55 million shares. This investment will be activated immediately upon signing the deal.

What can passengers expect on the streets?

In the initial phase, Uber or its partners may acquire the first 10,000 fully autonomous Rivian R2 electric vehicles. Starting in 2028, riders in San Francisco and Miami might be able to request fully driverless Rivian R2s via the Uber app.

Subsequently, Uber will have the option to purchase an additional 40,000 vehicles from Rivian by 2031, which will be deployed in 25 cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe. However, the majority of the investment is contingent on Rivian achieving specified performance milestones.

Additionally, Uber has agreed to pay licensing fees for Rivian’s autonomous driving software. To provide context, Rivian’s third-generation autonomy platform incorporates 11 cameras, five radars, and one LiDAR, all operated by two proprietary RAP1 chips that can deliver up to 1,600 TOPS of AI computational power.

The deal enhances Rivian’s position as a provider of autonomous technology.

It's important to note that Rivian is set to begin consumer sales of the R2 this spring. Once that occurs, the real-world driving data will likely enhance the autonomous systems even further. Rivian’s control over both its hardware (the vehicle) and its platform (the software) contributed to Uber’s decision to pursue this agreement.

Following this announcement, Rivian's stock rose by approximately 10%, indicating strong investor confidence in the collaboration. This deal supplements Rivian’s existing $5.8 billion software partnership with Volkswagen, further solidifying its role as a provider of autonomous technology.

For Uber, this marks the largest commitment to robotaxis the company has made, following previous collaborations with Lucid, Amazon's Zoox, Stellantis, and Nvidia.

Audi is reintroducing one of its most unique vehicles, this time in electric form. The brand has confirmed the new Audi A2 e-tron as its fresh entry-level EV, set to be revealed later this year. This represents a significant advancement in its electric vehicle lineup while also paying homage to a cult classic. If the name sounds familiar, this electric model is based on the original Audi A2, which launched in the early 2000s. Known for its lightweight design and aerodynamic shape, the original was notable for its aluminum construction and efficiency.

Musk even leaned into it with a proposed release date of April 1, 2026. However, the Roadster appears to be back in the spotlight, with Elon hinting at a reveal next month. In a recent tweet, Musk stated that the eagerly anticipated electric sports car will "hopefully" be unveiled next month, suggesting it will “probably” happen in late April.
