Tests indicate that the Apple M5 Max is outperforming AMD and establishing new performance records.

The M5 Max has just outperformed every processor listed on Geekbench—every single one.

The initial unofficial Geekbench 6 results for the 16-inch MacBook Pro featuring the M5 Max are in, and Apple is not merely leading the benchmark race; it's significantly outpacing the competition.

The M5 Max’s 18-core CPU achieved a multi-core performance score of 29,233, surpassing the Mac Studio’s M3 Ultra chip, which has a 32-core CPU and an average score of 27,726. That’s correct; an 18-core chip has bested a 32-core one. This results in approximately a 5% advantage over the M3 Ultra and up to 15% faster than last year's M4 Max.

The achievements don’t end there. In single-core performance, the M5 Max recorded a score of 4,268, marking the highest single-core result of any consumer PC processor evaluated on Geekbench, including AMD’s Ryzen 9 series. Apple had asserted that its super cores are the fastest CPU cores worldwide, and the benchmarks seem to support that claim.

What contributes to the speed of the M5 Max?

Apple has developed the M5 Max using a new Fusion Architecture that integrates two dies into a single chip, combining a potent CPU, a scalable GPU, and enhanced unified memory bandwidth.

The 18-core CPU is divided into six super cores optimized for speed and twelve new performance cores designed for efficient multithreading tasks. Additionally, the M5 Max can support up to 128GB of unified memory with bandwidth reaching up to 614GB/s. This new Fusion architecture has enabled Apple to enhance performance further than before, resulting in remarkable outcomes with its M5 Max chips.

      What about the GPU performance?

The GPU results are a bit more complex. The M5 Max’s 40-core GPU recorded scores of 218,772 and 232,718 in two different Metal tests, falling about 5% to 10% short of the M3 Ultra’s average of 245,053, yet exceeding the performance of the MacBook Pro with an M4 Max by over 20%.

However, we cannot yet compare this with Nvidia’s or AMD’s GPUs, as comparative test results are still pending. It's also important to note that GPU performance can significantly differ based on the specific applications or games used. Therefore, we can't evaluate how the M4 Max’s GPU will perform until it is available for shipping.

According to NanoReview, the Nvidia RTX 5090 has consistently recorded nearly double the scores of the M3 Ultra GPU in tests such as Geekbench 6 OpenCL and 3DMark, suggesting that the M5 Max may perform within a similar range.

In summary, the M5 Max offers up to 15% improved CPU performance and 20% enhanced GPU performance compared to the M4 Max. If you’ve been contemplating an upgrade to your MacBook Pro, these benchmarks might just influence your decision. Pre-orders are open, with availability set to begin on March 11.

Google is preparing the Gemini AI app for Mac, featuring Desktop Intelligence.

Google is advancing its desktop AI capabilities with the Gemini app for Mac currently in testing, potentially introducing a significant new feature called Desktop Intelligence. As reported by Bloomberg, Google has commenced private trials of an early version of the Gemini Mac app with a select group of users. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to compete more directly with desktop AI applications like ChatGPT and Claude, both of which already offer native experiences on Mac.

The current version is still in its early stages and lacks some of the planned features, but testing indicates that Google intends to release it soon. For the time being, Mac users mainly access Gemini through the web, so having a dedicated app could greatly enhance the user experience.

In other news, a startup will pay you $800 daily to work as an AI bully.

If you've ever been frustrated with an AI chatbot for not remembering what you said, you could be the perfect candidate for this role. A startup named Memvid is offering $800 for a day of work where your primary task is to challenge AI. Yes, that's right, professionally.

The position is as chaotic as it sounds. You'll spend eight hours interacting with chatbots, prompting them to remember information, observing their failures, and asking more follow-up questions. Your responsibility will be to document every frustrating moment and detail that the AI forgets.
