A newly released video from the Chinese technology firm showcases the Walker S2 humanoid robot skillfully holding a tennis racket, maneuvering around the court, and executing shots with apparent dexterity and accuracy.
The video runs at regular speed, and although it's heavily edited, it does depict the robot returning the ball to its human rival across the court in a striking demonstration of technological prowess.
Engaging in a game of tennis is a challenging task for a humanoid robot. It needs to detect the ball early, position itself correctly, choose a shot, and maintain balance and posture while swinging the racket to hit the ball.
From what we observe, the Walker S2 robot's tennis swings appear fluid and well-controlled.
It remains uncertain whether UBTECH is genuinely marketing its humanoid robot as a tennis companion or merely showcasing its sophisticated abilities. However, with continued advancements, there's a strong possibility that a quicker, more agile Walker S2 could navigate the court like a human player and compete effectively in singles matches. We might even witness tennis being included in the roster of events for a robot Olympics.
UBTECH introduced the Walker S2 robot in 2024 as a sophisticated industrial humanoid robot capable of autonomously swapping batteries for uninterrupted operation.
The company last made headlines in November with a video claiming to showcase the deployment of numerous Walker S2 robots, reportedly intended for use in commercial and industrial domains. Nonetheless, there was some debate over the authenticity of the footage, but the company affirmed its legitimacy.
This year is anticipated to bring even more significant progress in humanoid robotics, not just in maneuverability but also in AI intelligence.
