The company is testing a new feature named Prompted Playlists, which enables “you to specify precisely what you want to hear and set the guidelines for your customized playlist.”

      Spotify claims this feature utilizes your complete listening history, from the moment you began using the service, to create a tailored playlist based on your requests and listening habits. This marks a significant departure from automatically generated Spotify playlists, like Discover Weekly, which depend on the service’s algorithm to estimate your music tastes.

      The Prompted Playlist feature expands on Spotify’s existing AI playlist tool and accommodates larger, more intricate prompts, enabling users to provide more detailed instructions. It also supports iteration, meaning if you're not satisfied with the initial playlist, you can refine your request and generate a new version, aiding the algorithm in better understanding your preferences.

      Spotify mentioned that the playlist will come with detailed explanations, offering listeners context regarding why the algorithm selected the suggested tracks. To assist users in getting started, the platform will provide sample prompts.

      At present, Spotify is testing Prompted Playlists with Premium subscribers in New Zealand. It remains in beta and is currently accessible only in English, but the music streaming service is anticipated to broaden availability and include support for additional languages before the feature is released more widely.

      For listeners, the Prompted Playlist has the potential to significantly alter their music discovery experience on Spotify. Rather than depending on the algorithm to predict their preferences, this feature allows them to actively craft their playlist, making the discovery process more intentional.
