Blink cameras provide AI-driven notifications that accurately inform you about ongoing events.
Bid farewell to standard notifications and welcome AI Video Descriptions.
Amazon's Blink, a smart home device manufacturer, is drawing inspiration from Google and Ring to launch a new AI-enhanced feature that provides users with more intelligent and detailed alerts for events detected by its security cameras. Similar to Ring's AI Video Descriptions and Google’s Gemini-powered AI summaries, Blink's latest feature utilizes AI to assess security camera footage and produce natural-language summaries of the happenings.
This feature is currently available as an early beta preview in the US for Blink users subscribed to the basic or plus plans, aimed at delivering more useful alerts. Instead of receiving a vague notification such as “motion detected in the backyard,” users will get a more comprehensive description that, as Blink states, will “focus on identifying the main subject that triggered a motion alert and what action they are undertaking.”
These quick summaries will assist users in determining whether an alert requires immediate attention or can be ignored without needing to open the app. Although more beneficial than standard notifications, Blink’s Video Descriptions are not as advanced as those from Ring and Google. According to PCWorld, Blink’s summaries are not searchable like those of Ring, meaning users cannot swiftly find specific events using natural language queries. Furthermore, unlike Google’s Gemini, which can create daily summaries of all activities, Blink’s descriptions are restricted to individual occurrences.
Nevertheless, for those invested in Blink’s array of video doorbells and security cameras, this feature will be a welcome enhancement. It will reduce the necessity to open every single security alert, making the monitoring of security cameras more convenient. While Blink’s Video Descriptions may still trail behind the offerings of its competitors, the company might improve its functionality by the time the feature exits beta.
If you own a Blink security camera, you can test the Video Descriptions feature by updating your Blink app to the latest version and going to Settings > Notifications > Blink Video Descriptions. According to Blink’s support page, this feature is only available in English and is not compatible with the Blink XT, XT2, and Indoor (1st Gen) cameras.
