On August 8, China’s Xpeng Motors officially revealed images and information about its first extended-range hybrid vehicle (EREV), which is a new version of its X9 multi-purpose vehicle, expected to have an electric range significantly greater than current offerings.

Significance: This model could play a crucial role in Xpeng’s sales growth strategy for the year, illustrating the company's transition from solely producing electric vehicles to becoming an established manufacturer with a diverse range of vehicles utilizing various energy sources.

Xpeng anticipates that hybrid vehicles will facilitate its entry into international markets such as Europe, where the adoption of electric vehicles has stagnated or even decreased compared to China. The sales of Xpeng’s first hybrid EV will commence in China before expanding globally, as stated by CEO He Xiaopeng during the company’s AI tech day event last October.

Details: The X9, Xpeng's inaugural hybrid model, is expected to be available for sale in the fourth quarter of this year, with over 1,000 vehicles already undergoing testing in 20 countries worldwide, as He Xiaopeng noted on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo. He also shared an image of a tested X9 displaying the number 450 on its side, suggesting that the vehicle might provide at least 450 kilometers (280 miles) of all-electric range.

He revealed the plan coinciding with the public release of the car's registration filings by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The seven-seat vehicle is equipped with an economical iron-based lithium-ion battery pack from China’s CALB, alongside a small petrol generator, or internal combustion range extender, sourced from Harbin Dongan Auto Engine, which also supplies engines for Li Auto.

Xpeng Motors introduced its extended-range hybrid technology in October 2024, claiming it would enable a vehicle to cover 1,400 km on a full tank combined with a full charge, offering an electric-only range of 430 km. In contrast, the all-electric range for Li Auto and Huawei-backed Aito’s full-size crossovers, the L9 and M9, is less than 300 km respectively, while Zeekr’s forthcoming hybrid SUV, the 9X, is advertised to have a range of 380 km.

Xpeng Motors is planning to introduce various EREVs, including a new version of its G9 SUV, as well as an entry-level model anticipated to be priced below RMB 150,000 ($20,880), according to a report from local media outlet AutoPix on July 2. The company delivered 233,906 vehicles from January to July, marking an increase of more than threefold compared to the same period last year. Xpeng aims to sell 380,000 vehicles in 2025.
