The initial trailer for Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague guarantees to take your breath away.
After its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the first trailer for Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague has been unveiled. The title translates to New Wave in English, depicting director Jean-Luc Godard as he embarks on his first feature film, Breathless. This film is widely regarded as the start of the French New Wave and has significantly influenced the film industry as a whole.
Guillaume Marbeck portrays the director, with Zoey Deutch playing American actress Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as her French counterpart, Jean-Paul Belmondo. The teaser hints that the film is filmed in the same black-and-white aesthetic as the original Breathless, incorporating scenes from the film accompanied by French narration that outlines its essence: “A pretty boy. A pretty girl. Paris 1959. A gym. A director. A camera. Film. A producer. An ingénue. Stars. Money. An American star. An American car,” states the female narrator.
This isn’t Linklater's first venture into film history for inspiration; his 2008 movie Me and Orson Welles had a similar storyline, following a young man who secures a minor role in the renowned director’s 1937 staging of Julius Caesar.
Nouvelle Vague reportedly received an 11-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere. While such accolades don’t always reflect the true merit of a film, a lengthy ovation is generally more favorable than a brief one. The film's actual quality will remain uncertain until its release in theaters on October 8.
