Huawei goes on a wearable spree, unveiling four new smartwatches.
Huawei has embraced the wearable trend with its latest products, spearheaded by the Huawei Watch 5, which comes in two sizes. This is followed closely by the Watch Fit 4 and Watch Fit 4 Pro. These releases follow the introduction of the Huawei Watch GT 5, GT 5 Pro, and Watch Ultimate at the end of 2024. Here’s what you should know about these intriguing new smartwatches.
**Huawei Watch 5**
The Huawei Watch 5 features a circular display with integrated lugs and a strap, offering a sporty aesthetic. For the first time, Huawei has released its mid-range smartwatch in two sizes—42mm and 46mm—making it easier for more people to find a model that fits their wrist. The 42mm variant is crafted from stainless steel, while the 46mm is made of titanium, and both have a spherical sapphire crystal over the display. The 42mm model features a 1.38-inch screen, whereas the 46mm version has a larger 1.5-inch screen.
There are a total of eight different models available, with case colors that include purple, gold, and green, in addition to the more traditional white, black, and silver options. Buyers can also select from various strap types, including metal bracelets and sportier leather and rubber alternatives. The Watch 5 does not run on Google’s Wear OS; instead, it operates on Huawei’s HarmonyOS, where most of the new features can be found.
One of the standout features is the new X Tap technology, which utilizes a pressure-sensitive side button containing electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rate sensors, providing a comprehensive overview of your health in greater detail than using the rear sensor array alone. The Health Glance feature allows users to get 10 different health metrics in just three seconds, simplifying the access to health data compared to navigating through the software menus.
The pressure-sensitive button also introduces new gesture controls, including a swipe and double tap, for confirming actions or navigating menus. Additionally, the Watch 5 offers quicker blood oxygen readings, 24-hour heart rate variability (HRV) tracking, and the capability to monitor 100 different workout types, supports free diving, and offers offline color maps. It supports Wi-Fi 6 and eSIM connections, and the battery life ranges from three to four days in normal mode, extending up to 12 days in Battery Saver mode.
The Huawei Watch 5 is priced starting at 400 British pounds (approximately $530) and is currently available for purchase through the Huawei store, although Huawei does not sell its smartwatches in the U.S.
**Huawei Watch Fit 4 and Watch Fit 4 Pro**
Continuing its redesign of the Watch Fit series, the Watch Fit 4 and Watch Fit 4 Pro are tailored to attract those interested in the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 respectively. Both feature a 1.82-inch rectangular display, with the Fit 4 Pro protected by sapphire crystal and equipped with a titanium bezel on an aluminum case. The Fit 4 Pro boasts a higher peak brightness of 3,000 nits, compared to the 2,000 nits of the Fit 4.
The Fit 4 Pro’s larger button guard and more angular design distinguish it from the standard Fit 4, while it measures impressively thin at 9.3mm compared to the Fit 4's 9.5mm thickness, though it is slightly heavier at 32 grams versus 27 grams. Nevertheless, these weights make them suitable for extended wear. The Fit 4 is available in green, purple, white, black, or grey, while the Fit 4 Pro comes in blue, black, or green, and each has compatible straps with a proprietary connection system.
New features include a barometer, a depth sensor that supports diving up to 40 meters, 3D maps for 15,000 golf courses, a trail running mode with checkpoints, and running form analysis. The battery is expected to last for seven days in normal mode and up to 10 days with certain features turned off. The L1 and L5 GPS technology is included, along with tracking for 100 different workout modes, and numerous informative watch faces to choose from.
The Huawei Watch Fit 4 starts at 150 British pounds (about $200), while the Fit 4 Pro begins at 250 pounds (around $332). Both the Watch 5 and Watch Fit 4 series are compatible with Android and iOS smartphones through the Huawei Health app.
