During the upfront presentation on Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the streaming service Max will revert back to its original name, HBO Max, starting this summer.
Matthew McConaughey captured the sentiment perfectly when he said, “Sometimes you gotta go back to actually move forward.” Warner Bros. Discovery is embracing this notion as they rename their streaming platform to HBO Max.
At their upfront event in New York on Wednesday, the executives from Warner Bros. Discovery disclosed the name change. When the streaming service launched in 2020, it was called HBO Max, but three years later, the HBO branding was dropped, resulting in the name Max. This controversial choice has now been reversed, with HBO Max making a comeback this summer.
“The significant growth we have experienced in our global streaming service is driven by the caliber of our programming,” stated David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery. “Today, we are reintroducing HBO, the brand synonymous with the highest standards in media, to further accelerate that growth in the coming years.”
The presentation also highlighted that Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming business has achieved nearly $3 billion in profitability over the past two years, with 22 million new subscribers from various global markets. The company anticipates that subscriber numbers will surpass 150 million by the end of 2026.
HBO Max
The company asserts that they have set themselves apart through “quality and unique narratives.” The return to HBO Max is expected to “further propel the service forward,” as stated in the press release.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, remarked, “Given our current trajectory and the strong momentum we are experiencing, we believe HBO Max better captures our current consumer offering. It clearly communicates our implicit guarantee to deliver content that is recognized as exceptional and, to borrow a phrase we’ve often used at HBO, worth the investment.”
HBO Max enjoyed a robust start to the year with hits like The White Lotus season 3, The Last of Us season 2, and The Pitt. The service is expected to have an even more successful 2026 with releases like House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, followed by Harry Potter in 2027.
Max currently provides three subscription options: Basic with Ads for $10 per month, Standard for $17 per month, and Premium for $21 per month.
