Google aims to enhance the security of Android phones against theft with an upcoming update that could effectively achieve this goal.

The company has revealed it's working on improved factory reset protections for Android devices, set to roll out later this year.

This development is intended to make stolen Android phones extremely difficult to use, deterring thieves by making the effort seem futile.

The concept is that a stolen Android device becomes essentially unusable unless the original owner is the one to reactivate it.

Currently known as Factory Reset Protection (FRP), this feature is already available on Android 15, but it was announced during the Google I/O event that it will be more robust in the future.

The new iteration means that if someone attempts to bypass the setup wizard, they will need the owner's permission to use the device at all. Thus, it will not function as a standard phone unless the owner grants access again.

Owners can activate the FRP process through Find My Device, which allows for the remote lockdown of the device if it is lost. Importantly, the original owner can also reactivate the phone if it is recovered.

      What’s Google's statement?

During the Google I/O Edition event, Google outlined plans to "further strengthen Factory Reset protections, which will limit all functionalities on devices that are reset without the owner's consent."

A screenshot demonstrated an Android phone in FRP mode, indicating that it can detect attempts to bypass the setup wizard, thereby enforcing another factory reset. This aims to prevent any unauthorized access, making the device nonfunctional for anyone except the original owner.

When will the updated FRP be available?

Google has indicated this update will be released later this year. Given that Android 16 is expected soon, it’s likely this feature will not be included in that launch.

Instead, anticipate this security upgrade to be implemented in one of the Android 16 Quarterly Platform Releases (QPRs).

OnePlus users might gain a feature similar to the iPhone's Dynamic Island in Android 16

Google is reportedly working to incorporate sports scores into OnePlus's Live Alerts feature on OxygenOS 15. According to Android Authority, this will enable OnePlus users to receive real-time sports updates in an easily viewable format, akin to Samsung's Now Bar. The latest beta version of the Google app includes code indicating this feature, though Google and OnePlus have yet to officially confirm its launch. If introduced, this capability could enhance the OxygenOS experience for sports enthusiasts by providing non-intrusive notifications while they engage in other activities on their phones.

Google has inadvertently revealed images of the upcoming Android redesign

Google is slated to present its new "Material 3 Expressive" design system at I/O 2025 this month; however, someone at the company accidentally posted a blog on it this week. Although it was quickly deleted, the Wayback Machine preserved it, and the quick-thinking team at 9to5Google saved the images as well. The blog detailed the extensive research behind the new design system for Android 16, which included three years of studies with over 18,000 participants.

Android's desktop mode for phones is developing, and it appears familiar

Google's mobile operating system includes a hidden desktop mode that activates on an external display, mimicking a computing interface. However, this feature is located within the developer mode and lacks the polish required for serious productivity. Nonetheless, the company continues to work on an advanced experience for Android’s native desktop mode, aiming to transform phones and tablets into desktop computing devices. Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority has successfully enabled this mode in the latest Android 16 beta build, but he cautions that it may not be ready for a stable release in the subsequent months.
