OpenAI has expanded access to GPT-4.1, enabling users of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team to utilize the AI model.

On Wednesday, the company announced its integration of the model into its direct chatbot service, following its initial introduction as an API in April. The strong interest from developers prompted OpenAI to make the model available to paid users. Additionally, plans are in place to introduce GPT-4.1 for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users in the upcoming weeks.

As of Wednesday, paid users can find the model in the “more models” dropdown menu within ChatGPT.

The primary features of GPT-4.1 focus on coding and web development tasks. The model is capable of assisting with writing or debugging code, and OpenAI noted in April that it has shown considerable advancements compared to GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini.

These updates come in conjunction with OpenAI's adjustments to its model lineup, which includes the discontinuation of GPT-4 and the phase-out of the GPT 4.5 models. Shortly after, the GPT-4.1 API was introduced, touting its speed and cost-effectiveness as its standout qualities. Furthermore, the model has knowledge updated to June 2024.

OpenAI has partnered with various companies, such as Windsurf, Qodo, Hex, Blue J, Thomson Reuters, and Carlyle, utilizing the GPT-4.1 API.

Additionally, OpenAI announced that GPT-4.1 mini has replaced GPT-4o mini for all tiers of ChatGPT, including the free version. This option will also be accessible in the “more models” dropdown menu for paid users and will serve as the default model for free users once they exceed GPT-4o usage limits.

For reference, a ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20 per month, while a ChatGPT Pro subscription is priced at $200 per month. The ChatGPT Team plan is $25 per person per month when billed annually for two or more users.

Your politeness towards ChatGPT is raising OpenAI's energy expenses.

The saying “Politeness costs nothing” may need revision in the context of AI chatbots. Recently, someone on X questioned how much OpenAI spends on electricity at its data centers to process polite expressions like “please” and “thank you” during interactions with its ChatGPT chatbot.

Why using ChatGPT can complicate my writing experience.

I recall when ChatGPT was first launched, with many people claiming, "Writers are finished." Speculation arose about news sites, blogs, and nearly all online content becoming AI-generated. While those predictions felt exaggerated, I was also impressed by the text GPT could generate. Naturally, I had to experiment with the new tool myself, but I quickly realized that the outcomes weren’t as remarkable as they appeared. Fast forward to more than two years later, and based on my experiences, nothing has changed: whenever I utilize ChatGPT for writing assistance, it only hampers my progress and leads to frustration.
