The New York Times introduces a new puzzle game

The New York Times has added the next title to its Games collection following the ongoing success of Wordle – and this one focuses on math. Digits has players adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. You can currently try its beta online for free.

In Digits, players are challenged to achieve a target number. You receive six numbers and can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to the target as possible. Not every number has to be used, making this game a test of your math skills as you combine numbers and create the appropriate equations to reach the target figure.

Players can earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating for being within 10 of it, and a one-star rating for being within 25. Presently, there are also five different puzzles featuring increasingly larger numbers. I solved today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based game that should attract puzzle enthusiasts who appreciate games like Threes, as well as other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article launching Digits and outlining The New York Times Games team's development process, The Times mentions that the team will utilize this free beta to identify bugs and evaluate whether it deserves to enter a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." Be sure to try Digits while it's available, as The New York Times might further develop it based on user feedback.

Digits' beta is currently accessible to play for free on The New York Times Games' website.

Though it premiered in 2021 and gained mainstream acclaim that December, Wordle became a sudden cultural sensation in early 2022, making it nearly impossible to avoid without using a muted words list. It exemplified a rare success story in gaming, attracting a diverse audience due to its elegant simplicity.

Wordle’s popularity grew as rapidly as its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced it had acquired the puzzle game from its creator, Josh Wardle, in a low seven-figure deal that was unexpected and almost overshadowed Sony’s earlier announcement of acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie. This acquisition sparked some
