Earlier this year, Captain America: Brave New World presented a new trajectory for James “Bucky” Barnes, a role that Sebastian Stan has portrayed since 2011 in Captain America: The First Avenger. In Brave New World, Bucky, the former Winter Soldier, seemingly retired from his role as a reformed hero to pursue a political career by running for Congress. Thunderbolts indicates that Bucky successfully won his election to the House of Representatives, but his time in Congress was brief.
Stan recently discussed Bucky’s political journey with Entertainment Weekly now that he has joined the team of unconventional heroes in Thunderbolts. By the conclusion of the film, the team undergoes significant changes in circumstances. In the post-credits scene, Bucky remains with the team several months after their rebranding, suggesting his time as a Congressman has ended. Stan concurred that Bucky's short-lived political career was indeed over.
“Yeah, it’s almost like crossing it out, right? He’s still been trying to find how he can contribute in a way he hasn’t before,” Stan explained. “Ultimately, he realizes, ‘No, I am who I am, and I do things how I do them, and I should just do that.’ … The only issue I had was, ‘Well, why is he growing out his hair if he’s going to be a congressman?!’ But I still wanted to grow it out, so I was like, ‘I don’t care.'”
Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, confirmed that Bucky’s congressional term is “pretty well done,” adding, “I think he’s found a new place that makes much more sense for him.”
Without revealing specific details of the ending or the film’s post-credits scene, Bucky and his new teammates are set to take on a more significant role in Avengers: Doomsday than previously anticipated. This means the characters from Thunderbolts will return to theaters roughly a year from now when Doomsday is released on May 1, 2026.
