      A recent update to Google's Gemini AI application enhances users' ability to edit images using AI directly within the app. Previously, Gemini's image editing capabilities, which allow modifications such as changing backgrounds or adding objects, were accessible only through the Google AI Studio application. Now, this functionality is integrated into the Gemini app, which can be downloaded on Android and iOS devices.

      This means that users can take photos with their phones, upload them to the Gemini app, and apply AI-assisted edits right on their devices. Additionally, the app allows for the combination of text and image outputs, such as creating a bedtime story that includes both images and written content.

      “We’re introducing the ability to easily alter both your AI creations and images uploaded from your devices,” Google mentioned in their announcement of the update. “You can modify backgrounds, substitute objects, add elements, and more. For instance, you can upload a personal photo and request Gemini to create an image of you with various hair colors.”

      Google also notes that any images modified with Gemini will have an invisible watermark known as SynthID. This watermark serves to identify images created or edited using AI, indicating digitally that they have been altered. Although the watermark is imperceptible to the human eye and does not affect image quality, it ensures that any uploaded images are marked as AI-enhanced.

      As a result, systems like Google Search can designate the image as either AI-generated or AI-edited, and the watermark persists even if the image is cropped or edited further.

      The SynthID system is now open source and available for anyone who wants to explore it, which allows you to identify AI-generated images if you're questioning the authenticity of an image encountered online.
