FX has announced that Shōgun season 2 will be coming back. The network has disclosed the start date for production, along with details about the cast and storyline for the Emmy Award-winning series.
Production for Shōgun season 2 is set to commence in Vancouver in January 2026. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will reprise their roles in the upcoming season. Sanada portrayed Lord Yoshii Toranaga, one of the five Regents governing Japan, while Jarvis played John Blackthorne, an English maritime pilot aiming to establish trade with Japan. In addition to acting, Sanada will also serve as an executive producer for season 2, while Jarvis will be a co-executive producer.
The first season was based on James Clavell’s bestselling book, whereas season 2 will present an original storyline. According to FX, Shōgun season 2 will take place “ten years after the events of the first season and will continue the historically inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose destinies are deeply intertwined.”
Co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks will return for season 2 and have just completed the writers' room. Along with Kondo and Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, and Michael De Luca will serve as co-executive producers. FX Productions is producing Shōgun.
Shōgun was marketed as a limited series at its debut in February 2024. One month after the finale aired in April, Sanada signed a contract to return as Toranaga, enabling FX and Hulu to plan for two additional seasons. This renewal also transitioned Shōgun from a limited series to the drama categories for the 2024 Emmys.
The categorization shift proved insignificant, as Shōgun went on to become the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history, securing 18 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama, Lead Actor (Sanada), and Lead Actress (Anna Sawai). It is notably the first Japanese-language series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama.
You can stream Shōgun season 1 on Hulu.
