iPhone 17e: our expectations
It has been two months since Apple surprised many first-time iPhone buyers with the release of the iPhone 16e, and now news of the iPhone 17e has surfaced unexpectedly. The iPhone 16e was introduced as a successor to the iPhone SE, marking the end of the third generation of the SE series and prompting speculation about potential changes for the iPhone lineup. A leaker suggests that Apple is currently developing the iPhone 17e, aiming to establish affordable iPhones within its more premium lineup.
**iPhone 17e Release Date and Pricing Overview**
After the iPhone 16e’s launch in February, Apple enthusiasts anticipated that the "e" series of iPhones would be released annually, a few months following the arrival of the standard iPhones and Pro models in the fall. According to the leaker, the iPhone 17e is projected to launch in 2026, as it is "nearly in the trial development stage." However, this timeline could be adjusted to align with the release of the iPhone 17, expected later this year.
The price of the iPhone 17e may vary based on the storage options chosen by the buyer. The iPhone 16e starts at $599 for the 128GB model, with the 256GB and 512GB versions priced at $699 and $799, respectively — the latter matching the starting price of the base iPhone 16 model. Unless impacted by tariffs on electronics, the iPhone 17e is likely to be priced similarly to its predecessor.
**Current Leaks and Speculation Around the iPhone 17e**
Details about the iPhone 17e are limited, as it is still in the early development phase. However, we can expect more information to emerge as the release of the iPhone 17 approaches.
The initial leaks currently circulating suggest an earlier release date. However, since release dates can change, it's advisable to approach this information with caution.
**Expectations for the iPhone 17e**
As we await further updates about the iPhone 17e, it’s worthwhile to express our hopes regarding its design and pricing, particularly in comparison to the iPhone 16e. Here’s what we desire in the iPhone 17e.
**Dynamic Island**
In 2022, Apple introduced the Dynamic Island feature, allowing users to easily manage phone calls and music playback by tapping on a pill-shaped display while browsing their devices. Initially exclusive to the Pro models of the iPhone 14, Apple later made this feature available across all iPhone 15 and 16 models.
While the iPhone 16e lacks the Dynamic Island feature that its more expensive counterparts possess, it would be appropriate for the iPhone 17e to include it. Being a budget smartphone doesn't diminish its suitability for features that display currently playing songs and caller IDs.
**120Hz Refresh Rate**
The iPhone 16e comes with a 60Hz refresh rate, which provides decent smoothness for its 6.1-inch OLED display but doesn't compare to the iPhone 16 Pro. It would be advantageous for the iPhone 17e to feature a 120Hz refresh rate, resulting in smoother frame rates during app transitions, scrolling, video playback, and gaming.
For the 120Hz refresh rate to function effectively, the iPhone 17e’s screen would ideally support a peak brightness between 1,200 and 2,000 nits; however, it may remain on the lower end of that spectrum.
**Additional Camera Lens**
While the higher-end iPhones boast two or three camera lenses depending on the model, the iPhone 16e is equipped with only one 48-megapixel camera and 2x telephoto zoom, which helps keep costs down. The iPhone 17e should include a second camera lens — preferably an ultrawide lens with 12MP or more.
This may not be the most advanced spec for an ultrawide lens, but it would enhance the visual quality of photos and videos taken with the device and provide a substantial 120-degree field of view.
**Lower Pricing**
Upon its release, the iPhone 16e started at $599 for the 128GB model. While this price was acceptable for some, it may not appeal to everyone, especially first-time buyers wanting to try out an iPhone. Therefore, the iPhone 17e should ideally be priced around $499 for the 128GB model, with the 256GB and 512GB versions priced at $599 and $699, respectively. This pricing would cater to those transitioning from Android to iPhone or those facing financial challenges.
