Solar cells instead of batteries
California has begun mass-producing solar cells that can replace conventional batteries in remotes, sensors, and other low-power devices. The startup Ambient Photonics is behind this, which took a school experiment with coloring substances and turned it into an industrial technology of the future.
The idea is simple: use a special dye similar to chlorophyll to capture light and turn it into electricity. These cells work even in low light conditions — much more efficient than the old solar panels from the 80's calculators. The company's CEO, Bates Marshall, says that such cells already power Lenovo keyboards and other gadgets, without revealing all the details.
Why is this necessary?
First of all, it's ecology. In the best traditions of the Greens, economic benefits pale before the environmental agenda. In 2022, a record amount of electronic waste was generated in the world — 62 million tons, and new cells emit 90% less carbon dioxide than batteries.
Secondly, it is convenient. The devices do not need to replace the batteries. Such solar cells are not suitable for phones or laptops — they are not that powerful. And in some cases, additional equipment is needed for their operation, which also leaves an environmental footprint. But in general, this is a big step forward.
Where will the production work
The company built a factory in Scotts Valley, near Silicon Valley, to be independent of unstable global politics. After the trade wars between the United States and China, it became more profitable to produce in the United States. Ambient Photonics also plans to build a second, even larger plant here by applying for state support.
The company is now on track to produce hundreds of thousands of solar panels per month, and plans to produce millions by 2026. Ambient Photonics hopes for new investments and increases cooperation with large clients. The names are being kept secret, but apparently, solar technologies will soon appear in the most unexpected places — from shops to smart homes.
Small solar panels may soon replace batteries in a bunch of devices. It is not only more environmentally friendly, but also more convenient. The main thing is to make them affordable.
