Julia Garner, from the Fantastic Four, initially believed that the Silver Surfer had to be portrayed as a man.
In a recent interview, Julia Garner, star of Fantastic Four: The First Steps, revealed that she was unaware a female version of the Silver Surfer existed.
This summer, Emmy winner Julia Garner will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: The First Steps. In the earlier 20th Century Fox film, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the character is depicted as male. However, in The First Steps, Garner will portray the female version known as Shalla-Bal.
While discussing her role with EW, Garner expressed her surprise upon learning about Shalla-Bal during her first meeting with director Matt Shakman. "I met with Matt, who is wonderful. We met at some restaurant in Burbank or somewhere. I can't recall exactly, but I knew it was for the Fantastic Four," Garner shared. "Then I found myself confused because I thought, ‘Isn’t the Silver Surfer a man?’ I thought, ‘Alright, I’ll take any role.’ [Laughs] I was a huge fan of Matt’s work, so in my mind, I believed I should meet him because he’s an incredibly smart director and I admire what he does. Then he told me about Shalla-Bal and the whole concept."
Marvel projects are known for being highly confidential, and details are often shared only on a need-to-know basis. Therefore, Shakman only discussed the character's backstory and the film's setting in the 1960s. This led Garner to think she wouldn’t get the role.
"I thought, ‘I don’t know how he would choose me for this role.’ We were talking about topics like communism and brutalist architecture," Garner said. "Then I was told, ‘You got the part.’ I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ So I think we connected, but you can never be sure, that’s what I’m saying."
Garner also revealed that her version of the Silver Surfer serves Galactus, voiced by Ralph Ineson, the cosmic entity that devours planets. However, she hinted that the Silver Surfer's loyalties might be ambiguous.
"She works for Galactus, but her true motivations are unclear," Garner explained. "Is she aligned with her boss, or is she simply following orders? She has this enigmatic presence, and that mystery will gradually unfold for the audience as they watch."
The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in theaters on July 25.

In December 2020, before filming started on Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel secured director Jon Watts for the new version of the Fantastic Four. This decision was solid, given Watts' successful track record with the MCU Spider-Man movies. However, it seems three superhero films in five years was enough for Watts. According to Deadline, both Marvel and Watts have confirmed his departure from the Fantastic Four project. Reports suggest it was a mutual and amicable separation, evident in the joint statement from Marvel's Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito.
