If you've been considering getting an Xbox, you might want to contemplate upgrading your television instead. Certain LG smart TVs have recently acquired the Xbox App, enabling gamers to stream games directly from the Internet without needing a console. By subscribing to Xbox Game Pass, you can access a vast array of games in its cloud gaming portfolio, and through the Buy and Stream service, you can buy specific games and play them, even if they are not included in the Game Pass selection.
However, there is a stipulation: you must own a compatible LG TV for this feature to work. Xbox states, “Available on LG TVs with webOS 24 or newer versions. This includes selected 2022 and 2023 models that have been updated to software version 23.20.01 or higher, including 2022 OLED TVs and 2023 OLED, QNED, Nanocell, and UHD TVs.” The announcement also mentions that LG smart monitors with webOS24 or later are compatible as well.
Not only do you not require an Xbox console, but there is also no need for an Xbox controller. As long as you possess a compatible Bluetooth controller, you can enjoy your gaming experience — and yes, PlayStation Dualsense controllers are also compatible.
Xbox Cloud Gaming has significantly advanced from its earlier versions, now allowing even fast-paced games to be played with minimal input delay. While it may still be inadvisable to attempt competitive fighting games over a cloud network, racing games like Forza Horizon 5 perform and look fantastic. You can also play new titles such as Avowed, Atomfall, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
All you need to do is go to the LG Gaming Portal and download the Xbox app. After that, either create an account or log in, and you'll be ready to start playing. Just a heads up: it can be quite addictive, so ensure you have time set aside for a gaming session.
