NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Wednesday, April 23.
Connections is among the finest puzzle games offered by the New York Times. In this game, you're challenged to categorize a selection of 16 words into four secret groups by determining how they are related. The puzzle resets every night at midnight, and each new challenge can vary in difficulty. Similar to Wordle, you can track your winning streak and compare scores with friends.
Some days may be more challenging than others, just like other NYT Games favorites such as The Mini and Strands. If you're facing difficulties with today’s puzzle, take a look at our Connections tips and tricks guide for some effective strategies, or check out the hints for today’s Connections puzzle below. If you still can’t figure it out, we’ll provide today’s answers at the end.

You can access Connections through the New York Times website or by using the NYT Games app available on iOS or Android.
In Connections, you'll see a grid with 16 words, and your goal is to sort these words into four sets of four by identifying the connections that tie them together. These sets could consist of themes like titles of video game franchises, sequels of book series, shades of red, names of chain restaurants, etc.
Typically, some words may seem to fit multiple categories, but there is only one strictly correct answer. You can shuffle the word grid and rearrange them to help clarify potential connections.
Each group is color-coded: the yellow group is the easiest to identify, followed by green, blue, and purple groups.
Select four words and click Submit. If you're correct, those four words will be removed from the grid and their connecting theme will be revealed. Incorrect guesses will count as mistakes. You have a total of four mistakes available before the game concludes.

Who is responsible for editing the NYT Connections game?
Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles for The New York Times since 2020, oversees Connections on a daily basis.
“A few months ago, a new assignment landed on my desk: Create the game boards for Connections, a category matching game that had recently been approved and was looking for an editor,” Liu noted in an article detailing her process in June 2024. Most of my experience in puzzle editing has been with crosswords, and I was eager to try something different. I have enjoyed learning how puzzle editing operates once a game is approved and understanding how our team fits into a broader ecosystem.”
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Connections' launch earlier this year, Liu shared this TikTok about her favorite puzzles to date:
