A new puzzle game joins Wordle: The New York Times expands its games collection

Following the ongoing success of Wordle, The New York Times has released a new game focused on math. In Digits, players engage in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers. You can currently try its beta online for free.

In Digits, gamers are presented with a target number to match using six available numbers through any combination of operations. Not all numbers must be used, making this game a test of your math skills as you strive to formulate the right equations to get as close to the target as possible.

A five-star rating is given for an exact match to the target number, a three-star rating for being within 10, and a one-star rating for being within 25 of the target. Players can also access five different puzzles with larger numbers progressively. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable numeric challenge that should resonate with curious minds who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article introducing Digits and explaining the development process of The New York Times Games team, the Times mentioned that they will utilize this free beta to address bugs and evaluate whether it's worthwhile to enter a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." So enjoy Digits while it’s available, as The New York Times might discontinue it if it doesn't receive the anticipated feedback.

The beta version of Digits is currently playable for free on The New York Times Games' website.

It stands out as a rare gaming success story, reaching a diverse audience due to its straightforward charm.

Wordle's success soared alongside its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced it had acquired the puzzle from creator Josh Wardle in an undisclosed, low-seven-figure deal—a surprising move that nearly overshadowed Sony's announcement regarding its acquisition of Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours before. This acquisition sparked concern among
