Next year, Apple is anticipated to unveil its inaugural foldable iPhone. This new device will emerge several years after Apple, Google, and numerous other companies have already launched various generations of foldable phones. Insights are emerging about Apple's reasons for its delayed entry into the market, which are somewhat unexpected.
As reported by BusinessKorea (via 9to5Mac), Samsung was able to fulfill Apple's display quality standards for the new phone earlier this year. Prior to this, none of Apple's display suppliers had been able to remove a visible crease to Apple's satisfaction, which had been a significant issue for users of previous foldable phones. Samsung achieved this by collaborating closely with Amphenol, the hinge supplier that manufactures hinges for MacBooks.
The report mentions: “Apple's decision to depend solely on Samsung Display is significant considering Apple's usual strategy of utilizing multiple suppliers to reduce costs while ensuring high quality. Industry insiders point out that Samsung's six years of experience in foldable OLED technology, beginning with the launch of the Galaxy Fold in 2019, played a pivotal role in finalizing this exclusive contract.”
Despite Samsung's advancements, Apple's other display suppliers, including LG and BOE, have struggled to meet these standards. Consequently, Samsung will be the exclusive display supplier for the first-generation iPhone Fold.
Earlier this week, leaker Digital Chat Station shared what it believes are the display specifications for Apple's rumored iPhone Fold. It states that the foldable will feature an internal 7.76-inch display with a resolution of 2713 x 1920 pixels and an external 5.49-inch display with a resolution of 2088 x 1422 pixels. Both displays are expected to have a 13:9 aspect ratio, with the internal display resembling an iPad mini more than an iPhone when opened. Additionally, the new phone is likely to boast an impressive pixel density of 428 ppi.
Apple's first foldable is surely set to be the most awaited new phone of 2026. It is expected to be part of the iPhone 18 lineup, which will probably be unveiled in September of next year. The iPhone Fold could potentially be priced between $2,000 and $2,500, making it the most expensive iPhone to date.
In the meantime, development continues on this year’s iPhone models, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new “iPhone 17 Air.”

Samsung's ambitions for foldable phones are exceeding our expectations.
Samsung is well-versed in foldable phones, with devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 nearing release. A newly uncovered patent suggests that Samsung's vision for foldables extends beyond what was previously anticipated. A post on SamMobile indicates that the display is designed to fold not two or three times, but four times, using three separate hinges. This would allow it to expand to a size comparable to that of most tablets.
While it's challenging to make definitive claims based solely on a patent, the included diagram provides some insight into what the final product may resemble. Initial impressions suggest that it could be on the bulkier side. The central hinge appears to be the largest, and the outer panels would fold inward twice—once onto themselves and then onto the two inner halves—resulting in dimensions similar to a modern phone, albeit several times thicker.
