Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo unveiled its latest flagship Find X8 series on Thursday, which consists of the Find X8s, Find X8s+, and Find X8 Ultra. The Find X8 Ultra is highlighted as the brand's photography-centric flagship, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and a state-of-the-art 2K display. The company promotes it as the "ultimate tool for night portrait photography."
Why it matters: Amid a saturated smartphone market experiencing a decline in groundbreaking innovations, manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing imaging features. The Oppo Find X8 Ultra represents this focus.
Details: The Oppo Find X8 Ultra will be available for purchase starting April 16, with the 12GB + 256GB variant priced at RMB 6,499 ($889). The device measures 8.78mm in thickness and is designed with a 6.82-inch 2K ultra-narrow bezel flat display made from BOE’s X2 material, challenging the perception that flagship phones must be bulky, according to Oppo. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and features a 6,100mAh battery. The company claims it supports wired charging at 100W and wireless charging at 50W, with the wired option capable of fully charging the device in just 35 minutes.
The rear penta-camera system includes a 50MP wide-angle main camera utilizing a 1-inch Sony LYT900 sensor, complemented by a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 50MP telephoto lens, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 2MP Danxia True Color lens.
The Danxia True Color lens incorporates the LUMO imaging system and introduces the industry’s first “zonal color temperature sensing” technology, which identifies differences between the subject and surrounding light sources, resolving issues like skin tone distortion and background overexposure in night portrait photography, as stated by Oppo.
The camera features a dual periscope telephoto system with a focal range of 70mm to 135mm, providing lossless optical zoom to prevent quality loss associated with digital zoom, according to the company. Co-developed with Hasselblad for color accuracy, it allows for 4K/60fps Dolby Vision HDR video recording across all focal lengths.
Context: Oppo's smartphone lineup primarily includes the imaging-focused Find X series, the foldable Find N series, and the mid-range Reno series. This year, another Chinese smartphone brand, Vivo, is venturing into the robotics sector with the introduction of its new Robot Lab, illustrating how phone companies are exploring new expansion avenues.
In March, Vivo announced the launch of its Robot Lab at the Boao Forum for Asia. This initiative aims to concentrate on the consumer market, specifically in household applications, addressing needs in domestic chores, elderly care, and education.
The lab employs a dual-engine strategy: the “brain” operates on Vivo’s proprietary BlueHeart large model matrix for intelligent decision-making and learning, while the “eyes” utilize mixed reality (MR) technology to develop a spatial perception system for improved environmental awareness and interaction.
