Three overlooked Netflix series to check out this weekend (April 11-13)

Browsing Netflix can be entertaining, but you may come to realize that you're not subscribed just for the sake of scrolling. If you’re in search of a show to truly enjoy, we’ve ensured the algorithm leads you in the right direction.

Each of these shows is relatively concise and caters to a variety of preferences. Whether you're interested in a captivating murder mystery or a mix of sci-fi and horror, this list aims to cover your needs.

Additionally, we have curated lists of the best new shows to stream, top picks on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Disney+.

      The Midnight Club (2022)

Mike Flanagan has crafted several highly acclaimed horror series for Netflix, but The Midnight Club is perhaps the most overlooked and undervalued. The show centers on eight terminally ill teenagers residing together who gather at midnight to share frightening tales and seek signs from the afterlife.

This series offers a contemplative look at death, reflecting much of Flanagan’s work. The Midnight Club provides plenty of chills while allowing for a diverse range of scary stories without sidelining its main characters for too long. It may not be flawless, but it is definitely worth a watch.

You can find The Midnight Club on Netflix.

      Terminator Zero (2024)

An anime series rooted in the Terminator universe, Terminator Zero is set in a completely different segment of this world, enhancing its appeal. The story follows a computer programmer in 1997 who is developing a program intended to rival Skynet.

On the eve of Judgment Day, he realizes that both he and his family are being pursued by a robotic assassin. Moreover, a man from 2022 has traveled back in time to save them. This familiar Terminator storyline is enriched by vivid animation and the unique setting in Japan. It’s a refreshing twist for a franchise that seems to have stagnated in film.

You can watch Terminator Zero on Netflix.

      Ripley (2024)

Though it was released just last year, Ripley seems to have received less appreciation than it merits. Starring Andrew Scott in the lead role, this series is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, complementing the existing film adaptation nicely.

For those unfamiliar, the narrative follows Ripley, who is enlisted to track down the heir of a wealthy man living recklessly in Europe. As he becomes more entwined with this affluent heir's life, chaos ensues, leading to violence. Scott excels in the leading role, and the series showcases some of the finest black-and-white cinematography of the past decade.

You can watch Ripley on Netflix.
