With the conclusion of The White Lotus season 3, HBO is set to launch two popular shows this weekend: The Last of Us season 2 and Hacks season 4. The first broke viewership records as it became a cherished video game adaptation, while the latter recently snagged the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.

While HBO consistently produces outstanding television, the movie selection on Max is quite impressive as well. While blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings and DC films are enjoyable, there's a variety of underrated gems across different genres. Try something different this weekend and check out one of these three films.

We also provide guides to the best new movies available for streaming, as well as the top movies on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Disney+.

      **Greenland (2020)**

      STXfilms

Greenland showcases Gerard Butler embracing his inner '90s action hero to save the world. Instead of battling a foe, Butler faces one of his greatest challenges: the fury of nature. After a devastating comet collides with Earth's atmosphere, humanity's time is running out.

John Garrity (Butler), his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin), and their son (Roger Dale Floyd) must catch an evacuation flight to a secure bunker in Greenland. Time is of the essence, as desperate people will do anything to secure a place in that bunker. Good luck trying to stop Butler in a confrontation.

      **Y2K (2024)**

Nostalgia can be intoxicating. In Y2K, Kyle Mooney visits 1999 and reflects on the year 2000 crisis in a horror-infused comedy. It's New Year's Eve in 1999 when best friends and misfits Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison) crash a well-known high school party so Eli can approach his crush, Laura (Rachel Zegler).

When the clock strikes midnight, chaos erupts from an unexpected source: technology. Sentient devices—basically anything electronic—initiate a deadly rampage, taking control of the town. The few survivors must unite to stop the Y2K catastrophe before AI dominates. If anything, Y2K will deepen your appreciation for Fred Durst.

      **The Lighthouse (2019)**

Robert Eggers excels in creating immersive worlds. As a diligent filmmaker, he pours immense thought and care into each scene. The Lighthouse stands out as arguably his most contentious film. While the plot of two men working in a New England lighthouse in the 1890s may not seem thrilling,

Eggers fuses horror, psychological thriller, and comedy into a compelling exploration of isolation and the human mind. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, as the lighthouse keepers, fully embrace their roles as two men spiraling into madness. The Lighthouse also features some of the top cinematography and production design from that year.

Attention builders, it's time to check out A Minecraft Movie. Warner Bros. is set to release its anticipated adaptation of the best-selling video game in 2025, featuring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, sure to draw families to theaters. With projections indicating a potential $70 million opening, an announcement for a quick sequel may not be far behind.

Kids are evidently the primary audience for A Minecraft Movie. Once they're done, parents might need something to watch. Why not save some cash and stream a free movie on a FAST service? One of our selections pays tribute to the late Val Kilmer, who sadly passed at the age of 65, featuring one of his most significant roles.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, as well as the top films on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Disney+.

      **The Doors (1991)**

Following Val Kilmer's passing, actress Jennifer Tilly recounted her experience meeting him while auditioning for The Doors. She shared on X that Kilmer arrived at the audition "barefoot, shirtless, and only in tight leather pants." Tilly realized Kilmer was destined to play Jim Morrison, noting "no one else stood a chance."

Directed by Oliver Stone, The Doors portrays the rise, fall, and tragic demise of Jim Morrison (Kilmer), the band’s charismatic lead singer. The band transitions from local to national stars, primarily due to Jim's captivating presence. However, his struggles with addiction and interest in cults lead to tensions within the group. Although not regarded as the greatest film, Kilmer’s daring performance is worthy of recognition.
