Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon TV series in development
A television series inspired by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is currently being developed for Prime Video.
According to Deadline, the series is the creation of writer and executive producer Jason Ning, along with executive producer Ron Moore. Both have agreements with Sony Pictures, which holds the rights to the original material.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon draws from the Crane-Iron novel series by Wang Dulu. The story centers on Shu Lien and Mu Bai, “two fated warriors grappling with forbidden love and the allure of modernity — torn between maintaining their traditional way of life and embracing a shared future.”
Previously, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was adapted into a feature film directed by Ang Lee. The film, released in 2000, featured Chow Yun-fat as Li Mu Bai, Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien, Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu, and Chang Chen as Lo “Dark Cloud” Xiao Hou. The film achieved a worldwide gross of $213 million, including $128 million in the U.S., becoming the first foreign-language film to surpass $100 million at the box office in the U.S.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon received widespread critical acclaim, earning 10 Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Director. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and stands as one of the significant cinematic achievements of the 21st century.
Ning is recognized for his contributions to The Brothers Sun, Lucifer, and Perception. Moore is an executive producer of Outlander and For All Mankind.
The executive producers for the Amazon series include Ning, Moore, Maril Davis, Johnny Levin, Roy Lee, Hong Wang, and Qin Wang, with Ying Lou serving as co-executive producer.
