      **MSRP:** $630.00

“The BenQ RD280U delivers clear text that developers can look at for extended periods - but it’s designed specifically for developers.”

      **Pros:**

      - Sturdy construction

      - Highly legible text

      - Features that minimize fatigue

      - Good connectivity

      **Cons:**

      - Not ideal for non-coders

      - Limited or inaccurate color reproduction

      - Brutalist design

Users can have varying needs for equipment. For instance, a professional photo editor requires a top-tier monitor with the broadest and most accurate color spectrum, far more than a standard user engaged in productivity tasks or media streaming. A specialized need arises for coders (and writers too) who spend all day focused on text and numbers, necessitating a monitor optimized for clarity.

BenQ has created a solution with the RD280UA, utilizing high resolution combined with a unique “coder” mode aimed at reducing eye strain during prolonged character-focused tasks. After reviewing it, I can confidently say that if this monitor meets your needs, you will appreciate it.

There are two variants of the monitor. The RD280UA reviewed features an ergonomic flexible arm for desk mounting, priced at $630. The RD280U, available for $600, comes with a basic stand. The flexible arm is a sensible addition for just $30 more, boasting a robust design that rivals pricier alternatives. Both monitors adhere to the VESA 100x100mm standard, allowing for the use of third-party mounts if desired. Overall, while the RD280U/UA may seem pricey for a UHD+ IPS monitor, it is not excessively so. It is particularly suited for those who need a strong focus on text clarity but does not deviate significantly from the cost of larger, high-resolution IPS displays with comparable performance.

      **Design**

In comparison to my last review of the Apple Studio Display, which embodies a sleek and refined design typical of Apple products, the RD280UA presents a more robust aesthetic. It is primarily black, with a simplistic yet commanding presence. The monitor is somewhat thick without the stand and has a striking form. The ergonomic flexible arm on my review unit is exceptionally well-engineered and tailored for this monitor, functioning exceptionally well. It is also heavy and feels sturdy, though it may not suit those in search of a minimalist setup. With a design reminiscent of brutalist architecture, this monitor certainly establishes its presence.

Despite a preference for the all-metal design of the Apple Studio Display, I have no doubts about the RD280UA’s long-term durability. Its solid construction suggests it will last for years. The monitor arm also features decent cable management to keep things organized.

On the rear, a “MoonHalo” light adjusts automatically according to ambient light, offering background illumination that helps to minimize glare — a thoughtful feature that aligns with the monitor’s ergonomic focus.

The monitor is highly adjustable, allowing for smooth tilt, swivel, and height modifications. The RD280UA can be pivoted 90 degrees, making it especially useful in portrait mode for those frequently dealing with vertical text (like coders). The 3:2 aspect ratio offers additional height in landscape mode, which is another benefit. The pivot mechanism is also notably smooth, more so than other monitors I’ve encountered. Just ensure it is set high enough to avoid interference with the desk during pivoting.

Unboxing the monitor is quite different from Apple’s streamlined process. While unpacking the Apple monitor is quick and straightforward, the BenQ experience can be cumbersome. One must first remove the top cardboard section containing accessories before extracting the monitor from the box and placing it on a flat surface for
