Alan Cumming expresses that he is 'thrilled and astonished' to have the opportunity to come back to Nightcrawler.

The recent cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday included many anticipated names, along with a few noteworthy omissions. However, perhaps the most surprising revelation was the return of several original Fox X-Men from the early 2000s trilogy. Among the prominent actors returning are Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming, who portrayed Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United.
In a recent conversation with Jenna Bush-Hager and Olivia Munn, Cumming expressed his enthusiasm about reprising his character after more than two decades. "Isn’t it crazy? I’m thrilled and astonished. It’s been 23 years since I played a superhero. I’ve already had some makeup tests for the role, and the exciting part is that it used to take about 4 and a half hours to apply, but now it only takes 90 minutes," he shared. "Previously, all the tattoos were applied by hand, and they weren’t finalized before we began shooting. Now, they simply adhere to my face. It's a game-changer. I’m returning as a 60-year-old superhero, and everyone seems really wonderful."
The cast announcement also indicated that filming is now in progress, which Cumming confirmed during the interview. "I’m heading to London on Sunday, and shooting starts quite soon; it’s going to be wild," he remarked.
It remains unclear how significant the roles will be for these returning X-Men, many of whom have not reprised their roles in nearly 20 years. Still, their comeback signals that Marvel intends to fully incorporate the X-Men into its cinematic universe.
