AMD's GPU stock issues are expected to improve, but I'm worried about the prices.

      AMD

AMD's RX 9000 series launched impressively, quickly going up against some of the top graphics cards, with gamers eager to buy. The cards flew off the shelves right after release, leaving many waiting for restocks. On a positive note, we have some encouraging news: more GPUs are on the way. The downside? I still have concerns regarding their pricing.

This optimistic update comes from Frank Azor, AMD's chief architect of gaming solutions and marketing. Azor replied to a review of the RX 9070 XT by thanking the publication and added: “More supply is coming. Thank you for your patience.”

It's true that AMD's new GPUs were sold out extremely fast, which hasn't always been the case in the past. AMD managed to set the right prices; reviews have largely been positive, and the supply seemed to exceed what Nvidia has been able to deliver (despite claims that the RTX 50-series was shipped in large quantities).

In summary, everything aligned for a successful GPU launch, and it indeed was. A recent survey indicated that over 70% of gamers favored AMD over Nvidia's RTX 50-series.

More supply is coming. Thank you for your patience.

Although more cards are set to arrive, the situation isn't quite so straightforward. It's not just AMD GPUs that consumers are after — they're looking for them at the recommended retail price (MSRP), which could pose a challenge. Some retailers have already indicated they won't be able to sell the cards at MSRP moving forward.

      Amazon

I routinely monitor GPU prices, and a quick look at Amazon and Newegg reveals disappointing news. Amazon currently lists only a few RX 9070 XT cards at exorbitant prices, while Newegg's inventory is entirely sold out, with only one card listed at MSRP in the first place. The others are priced between $670 and $860.

It seems other gamers share my concerns. Responses to Azor's tweet mostly revolve around whether the cards will be sold at MSRP. This is understandable, as the GPUs offer great value at $600, but adding an additional $250 (or more) alters the perception significantly. For now, all we can do is remain patient and hope AMD reaches an agreement with its add-in board (AIB) partners.

AMD might’ve already lost the battle with the RX 9070 XT

It appears I've made an error again. I was genuinely looking forward to AMD's RX 9070 XT, but I'm increasingly anxious about its prospects. I always understood that the new AMD flagship might struggle to compete with some of Nvidia's leading graphics cards, but I had hoped it would still be a strong contender for various other reasons.

I'm not questioning the performance of the RX 9070 XT. I have no basis for doubt, as we lack concrete information about it — and that's precisely what worries me. Not only are the GPUs still shrouded in mystery, but they've reportedly faced delays as well. At this rate, I'm concerned that AMD may have lost the battle before it even started, and I'm not the only one.

      What's happening with RDNA 4?

We now understand why AMD has opted to delay RDNA 4 — sort of.

AMD hasn't been very transparent regarding details about its RX 9000 series GPUs, but we have received an update explaining why the cards won't be available until March. The company cites software optimization and FSR 4 as the main reasons for potentially delaying the launch of RDNA 4. However, is that the only reason, or is AMD waiting to observe some of Nvidia's top graphics cards before launching the RX 9070 XT?

The update comes from David McAfee, AMD's vice president and general manager of the Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics division. A few days ago, McAfee took to X (Twitter) to express enthusiasm about launching the RX 9000 series in March. This announcement triggered considerable discussion, with many enthusiasts questioning why AMD was opting for such a long wait.
