Three overlooked HBO Max films to check out this weekend (March 14-16).
Max boasts one of the finest streaming libraries available. The unsettling thriller Heretic, featuring Hugh Grant, has quickly become the top movie on the platform after just one week. If you enjoy award-winning films, the silent-animated adventure Flow is also available for streaming. Other titles on the service include Men in Black, We Live In Time, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
While these films may be popular choices for some viewers, there are numerous lesser-known movies waiting to be discovered. This weekend, consider watching one of these three selections: an outstanding cop thriller, a revealing sports documentary, and a studio comedy from 2016.
We also offer recommendations for the best films on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Disney+.
End of Watch (2012)
Open Road Films
David Ayer’s filmography clearly delineates between pre-Suicide Squad and post-Suicide Squad works. The films released before the DC superhero movie are generally considered superior to those that followed Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker. Ayer excels in crafting action films centered around police themes, and End of Watch stands out as one of his finest creations.
Best friends Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña) serve as partners in the LAPD. They are assigned to patrol a challenging neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. Both are principled officers, but their morals are put to the test when drug cartels infiltrate the area. End of Watch is undeniably a member of the "makes men cry" hall of fame, as its emotional depth is profound.

We Beat the Dream Team (2025)
Many sports enthusiasts are familiar with the term “Dream Team.” In 1992, the U.S. was permitted to send professional basketball players to compete in the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain. Team USA assembled some of the brightest stars from the NBA, such as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and others.
Prior to the Olympic games, the Dream Team needed a training camp to prepare. Team USA invited eight college players — Grant Hill, Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, Bobby Hurley, Jamal Mashburn, Allan Houston, Rodney Rogers, and Eric Montross — to play scrimmages against the Dream Team. During an unforgettable day in California, these college athletes achieved one of the most astonishing upsets that had gone unnoticed until now.

Why Him? (2016)
20th Century Fox
By 2016, studio comedies were gradually fading away. That year may have marked the final moments before the industry shifted largely toward streaming. Although Why Him? was viewed as a critical disappointment, it went on to gross over $118 million. Despite the critiques, the film offers some laughs throughout John Hamburg’s comedy, and Bryan Cranston demonstrates his range as an actor.
Ned (Bryan Cranston) is an overly protective father to his college-aged daughter, Stephanie (Zoey Deutch). While he adores his daughter, he has a strong dislike for her CEO boyfriend Laird (James Franco). Ned, along with the rest of the family, travels to California to visit Stephanie and Laird. To complicate matters, Laird intends to ask Ned for his blessing to marry Stephanie. What could possibly go wrong? It’s only a weekend getaway.
