The iOS 18.4 update is currently in beta and brings a new feature for EU users allowing them to select a default navigation app. This means that links will no longer open in Apple Maps for those who prefer Google Maps, although this option will not be available for U.S. users.

The Digital Markets Act of the EU is compelling Apple to implement several changes to its services, but not all benefits are making their way to the U.S. Apple has indicated its disagreement with many EU regulations, often making adjustments only when absolutely necessary.

Currently, this applies to the ability to select an alternative app marketplace and a different app for contactless payments. According to MacRumors, when iOS 18.4 is released, the option to set a default navigation app will be added to these changes.

Nonetheless, not all of Apple's new Default Apps settings are exclusive to the EU. iOS 18 allows all users to modify their default browser app, calls app, email app, keyboards app, messages app, and passwords app. Additionally, with iOS 18.4, the global capability to set a default translation app will also be introduced.

For U.S. consumers, it's worth noting that there are some disadvantages to being an Apple user in the EU as well. For example, the rollout of Apple Intelligence features in Europe has been significantly delayed, and, most frustratingly, the iPhone Mirroring feature for macOS is still not available — something that has been eagerly awaited since its announcement a long time ago.

I check the iPhone Mirroring feature nearly every week — just in case — but I’m always left disappointed.

This Reddit user created a Shortcut to estimate iPhone charging time

For quite some time, iPhone users have been asking for an estimate on how long it would take for their device to charge, but Apple has not yet delivered. Fed up with waiting, Reddit user u/AlxR25 took matters into their own hands and created the feature, sharing it on the r/iPhone subreddit.

They developed the Shortcut using a combination of commands and configured it to activate as soon as the iPhone is plugged into a charger. Once enabled, a message appears providing an estimate of the time remaining until the phone is fully charged.

Spigen inadvertently leaked iPhone SE 4 renders

The iPhone SE 4 has been highly anticipated, with expectations for its release next week. Recently, case manufacturer Spigen provided a glimpse of the device by uploading case images to its website, displaying an iPhone inside. The website claimed it was an iPhone SE (3rd gen), but the images clearly indicate otherwise.

We already had a general idea of what the iPhone SE 4 would look like, and the renders do not offer any unexpected features; it resembles the iPhone 14, complete with a notch at the top. The images also depict a single camera on the back of the phone. One notable alteration is that the Alert Slider — which toggles the phone's vibration — appears to have been replaced with an Action Button.

The iOS 18.4 Beta could be released as soon as February 12

Next week promises to be busy for Apple enthusiasts with the launch of the new Powerbeats and the iPhone SE 4 — but even more surprises may be in store with the upcoming iOS 18.4 Beta 1, according to Mark Gurman. While the launch might be delayed until the following week, it's expected to arrive before the end of February.

The forthcoming iOS 18.4 beta is rumored to include numerous enhancements related to Apple Intelligence functionality and Siri, such as screen awareness, personal context, and more. Should these changes materialize, it could signify a significant advancement for Siri, which has historically lagged behind its competitors. An update that brings Siri to the same functionality level as Google Assistant or Alexa would be a substantial advantage for Apple users.
