Individuals are beginning to receive the new M4 MacBook Air this week, leading to numerous revelations about its performance (and the striking new Sky Blue color). While editing photos in Lightroom Classic, YouTuber Vadim Yuryev observed that the CPU workload was nearly entirely managed by the laptop's six efficiency cores.

Wow!! Apple’s M4 MacBook Air is directing this CPU workload to all six of its Efficiency cores, with the four Performance cores being used minimally. (Left photo)

In contrast, the M3 (right) displays much greater usage of the four Performance cores.

According to Wccftech, this observation is notable because image editing software is typically very CPU-intensive, leading one to expect a reliance on the performance cores. This was certainly true for the M3 MacBook Air, where Yuryev demonstrates the use of all four performance and all four efficiency cores to complete tasks.

The reason for this change in behavior, its intentionality, or its relationship to Lightroom Classic remains unclear — but the potential benefits could be substantial. Engaging the efficiency cores while minimizing the performance cores' activity could enhance battery life and lower temperatures.

However, Yuryev's post does not clarify how well the software operates under these conditions — we can assume he highlighted it because it runs smoothly, but we can't be certain.

It is also possible that this behavior indicates a bug — after all, the performance cores exist for a reason, and their almost total inactivity while the efficiency cores are heavily engaged is peculiar.

With sources like Wccftech and tech influencers experimenting with this new model, we are likely to discover soon whether this is a mere coincidence or a designed feature of the new MacBook Air.

MacBook Air refresh with M4 silicon might be coming soon

A new iteration of the MacBook Air featuring Apple’s M4 processor appears to be forthcoming, potentially launching within a week. Bloomberg reports that “Apple is preparing to make a Mac-related announcement as early as next week,” hinting that the reveal is imminent.

The current MacBook Air with M3 silicon was unveiled in early March 2024, suggesting that Apple is adhering closely to its refresh timeline for this popular entry-level laptop. The new model is expected to be offered in both 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, similar to its predecessor.

Apple anticipated to launch MacBook Air refresh with M4 silicon in March

It seems that the next generation of MacBook Air laptops equipped with M4 silicon is just a few weeks away. Bloomberg notes that Apple is reducing inventory of the current model while preparing for the launch of the M4-equipped variant in March.

Design changes are unlikely, as Apple will likely maintain the aesthetic established with the M2 MacBook Air. The most significant update, of course, will be the introduction of M4 silicon, providing improved processing capabilities and efficiency metrics.

M4 MacBook Air performance nearly rivals Pro models

The M4 MacBook Air is expected to be Apple’s next lightweight and fast laptop, with a recent benchmark indicating it may offer slight performance enhancements over the latest MacBook Pro.

Apple plans to announce the upcoming laptop in 13-inch and 15-inch variants around March. A device believed to be the M4 MacBook Air appeared on the Geekbench 6 benchmark on February 19, showcasing results that experts are comparing with other Apple products, including the M4 MacBook Pro and the 13-inch M4 iPad Pro.
