Stephen King’s deadly dog is headed to streaming services. According to Deadline, Netflix will convert Cujo, King's popular novel, into a new film. Roy Lee, who produced Barbarian, will oversee the Cujo remake for the platform. Currently, there are no writers, directors, or cast members attached to Netflix’s adaptation.
Originally released in 1981, Cujo tells the story of a lovable dog that becomes a vicious killer. After a Saint Bernard named Cujo is bitten by a bat and contracts rabies, he embarks on a violent rampage in a small town. Donna and her young son Tad find themselves trapped in a small car with Cujo on the loose, and Donna must devise a way to escape Cujo's fury or face the risk of heatstroke.
Cujo was previously made into a feature film in 1983, directed by Lewis Teague and written by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner (under the pseudonym Lauren Currier). The movie starred Dee Wallace as Donna and Danny Pintauro as Tad, receiving mixed reviews while earning $21.2 million on a $6 million budget.
King continues to reign supreme in Hollywood when it comes to adapting his books for films and television. Last month, Osgood Perkins launched The Monkey, a comedic horror inspired by King’s 1980 short story, which has grossed over $45 million worldwide against a $45.8 million budget.
Numerous King adaptations are on the horizon. The Life of Chuck, a drama by Mike Flanagan based on King’s 2020 novella, won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF 2024 and is set to release on June 6, 2025. Edgar Wright’s highly anticipated version of The Running Man, featuring Glen Powell, will premiere on November 7, 2025.
Other upcoming King adaptations include the It prequel, Welcome to Derry; Fairy Tale with Paul Greengrass; The Institute from Benjamin Cavell; and Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk.

Lizzy Caplan reveals original ideas for the canceled Gambit film with Channing Tatum. Caplan was set to star alongside Tatum in Gambit, but the project was shelved following the Disney and Fox merger in 2019. Recently, Caplan discussed the "exciting" plans for the X-Men spinoff focused on Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit.
"It was a really cool idea," Caplan shared with Business Insider. "It's strange that it got canceled. Those movies usually don’t end up scrapped, but it happened."
Caplan’s involvement in Gambit was first reported in 2017, and she confirmed she was on board for the project. She had even met with Tatum to discuss the film's story, which would have likely shocked many.
"We were making progress toward production, we were going to film it," Caplan reflected. "There was a start date set. I had multiple meetings with Channing and the other producers, though the director situation changed."
Caplan continued, "They wanted to create a '30s-style screwball romantic comedy set in that universe, which would have been a lot of fun."
