Motorola created the most attractive brown phone I have ever come across.
If you thought I was overly enthusiastic about a grey phone recently, brace yourself because I'm about to feel the same way about a brown phone. The device in question is the Motorola Edge 50 Neo, and I've received the Mocha Mousse variant for a closer inspection. Without a doubt, it’s the most attractive brown phone I’ve ever encountered.
A brown phone?

Grey is one of the most neutral colors you can choose. It pairs well with black or white phones, as it is unlikely to offend anyone or detract from the design. Brown, however, doesn’t share that quality. It’s reminiscent of bears, tree trunks, and, well, other earthy elements. We chuckle at the tacky brown interiors of 70s cars and consider a brown interior today a bold choice, even on a Ferrari, where it’s often referred to as “tan” to disguise its true hue. Before seeing the Edge 50 Neo, I probably wouldn’t have chosen anything brown.
Yet, Mocha Mousse isn’t just brown. Well, not entirely. It has a chocolate tone that perfectly complements the old wooden tabletop at my local cafe and contrasts beautifully with an actual mocha coffee. It doesn’t blend in like a bear in the forest; instead, it pairs quite well with my cream hoodie, white Swatch Moonswatch watch, and gold Apple MacBook Air. I’ve discovered that a brown phone is far more versatile than I anticipated.

Mocha Mousse is not a flat brown, either. When you hold the phone, you’ll notice the black flecks in the finish that lend it an unexpectedly earthy appearance, but not in a bad way. It’s a thoughtfully designed brown that I believe only looks good on Motorola’s vegan leather material. If the Edge 50 Neo were made of glossy glass, I doubt it would have the same effect. The Mocha Mousse Motorola Edge 50 Neo is like the brown leather jacket of smartphones: a fashion essential that matches well with most outfits.
Coordinated wallpaper

Motorola is aware of the leather comparison, and there’s a beautifully matching, leather-like wallpaper available for your Mocha Mousse phone. Most smartphones come with a range of wallpapers, but many are either too plain or overly flashy, making it difficult to select one for review photos. Motorola’s coordinated wallpaper highlights texture impressively, making it an easy choice to showcase the phone’s flat screen.
The color scheme isn’t solely Motorola’s doing; it’s a collaboration with color specialists Pantone. The iconic color swatch panel on the back of the Edge 50 Neo proudly displays the name of the shade, ensuring you recognize it as more than just a color. Just as the Grisaille hue on another Motorola Edge 50 Neo I tested elevated it beyond being merely another phone, Mocha Mousse does the same.

If you’re thinking about buying the Motorola Edge 50 Neo, Mocha Mousse is the option to choose. While I like the Grisaille shade, it doesn’t stand out as much or have the uniqueness of Mocha Mousse. Additionally, Motorola has released a Mocha Mousse variant of the Razr Plus 2024, or Razr 50 Ultra for those outside the U.S.
We examined the compact folding phone in Mocha Mousse towards the end of last year. There are some notable differences between the two devices. The Razr lacks the Pantone swatch on the back and features a gold frame instead of the Edge 50 Neo’s gunmetal grey. Here’s a somewhat controversial opinion: I think the Mocha Mousse Edge 50 Neo looks superior to the Mocha Mousse Razr Plus; it’s simply less over-the-top, likely due to the gold metal.
What about the phone itself?

Picking up the Edge 50 Neo reminds me of how slim and lightweight it is—just 8.1mm and 171 grams—and how its sensible 71mm width makes it easy to handle with one hand. Compared to the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra that I've been using lately, the Motorola Edge 50 Neo feels quite compact. It brings to mind the excellent proportions of the old Asus Zenfone 9.
The phone has been available since August 2024, so while it remains a current model, we might see an updated version in the coming months. It’s also important to note that this phone is not available for purchase in the U.S., as Motorola continues to release different phones in various regions under different names, which complicates things for consumers. The Razr Plus 2024 is available in the U.S., but it is currently the only model in Mocha Mousse, so if you’re looking for that color and prefer not to have a foldable,
